Ticking---Timing chain???

every KA ive ever heard has a slight ticking or rattling sound from under the hood. Ive just assumed they were loud *** motors, im probably going to take my guides off of my timing chain and tension it back to spec. Do i need any specialty tools to do this? Also, my car rattles when i let go of the gas to shift and what now (sounds like heatshield?) anyone know what else that could be?

Check the cam shim clearances. If the cam or shims have wear on them it can cause the cam to kind of slap against the shim. This causes the engine to sound like an 83 Mercedes diesel (it happened to my 91). All you need is a set of feeler gauges and a shop manual. If there is too much clearance replace the shim. But really 95% of front engine rattling is caused by the timing chain and/or guides, so check them first.

didnt read through all the posts....but i have a ticking sound...almost like water bubbling, its a tapping valve in my case.

i had to take off almost all of my heatshields to get rid of the rattling under my car, but thats what was causing it.

well i know i have rattling heatshields, but im trying to get rid of the tapping under the hood. Thats the one that worries me, im just going to have to take it apart and remove the timing chain guides i guess

I've already took out my heat shield and I still have that "Marble rolling" sound under my valve cover:(

Fuel injectors can also make a tapping/ticking noise. A few of mine are quite loud.
