Hi,

I just bought a 2nd hand stock model 350z. I have no plan to modify it yet. I realise there is ticking sound coming from the engine. The previous owner told me that he use Shell Fully syntetic oil, and that causes the problem, is that true? how can i get/fix the ticking sound? I send the car to the agent and have a look at it, overall the car is tip top condition, the agent told me that the sound can be fixed after using Low grade Shell engine oil to get rid of the sound. But the sound will be gone after using the low grade oil in a long run. Have you all come across this problem, if YEs how did you get rid/fix the ticking sound problem. Overall i am happy with my car. Just that the ticking is kinda annoying.

ThanksJeff Chia

Had and old Supra. Ran great, put in a synthetic, same thing happen. Guys at Toyota said change the oil at Toyota and go run it hard for 200 to 300 miles and come back and change the oil again. It worked, surprisingly. Maybe Nissan has that issue also. Are you out of Manu Warranty? If so then if this doesnt work you may bigger issues. Good luck.

shell oil? as in bought at the gas station? I'd thik it's most likely rebranded, but back to the tick, switching to petroleum based oil shouldn't hurt anything but I fail to see how it coud help either, fuirst and formost what is the noise? does it raise with the rpm? can you determine which side of the engine it's coming from? it coud be a sticking lifter and you may or may not be able to free it without tearing into the engine, on the old vg engines ti was common for one fo the exhasut manifolds to crack leaving a slight exhasut leak and allowing you to hear one valve slam shut, soulded like a common lifter tick but was purely the result of hearing the exhaust

Hi,

Let me make it clear. My last post was not clear enough. The engine oil that was used is Shell Ultra Syntehic Oil (M-Oil). The mechanic at the agent recon the ticking sound is from 1 of the valve. And to fix/reduce the sound, i should change to a lower grade of engine oil. Im quite puzzle cause i tot using high grade engine oil is good for the car.

ThanksJeff Chia
