I bought my 06 used earlier this month and it had a ticking sound that is rev dependent. It does it for the first 6 minutes approximately when the engine is cold and begins around 2K RPMs.

After around 6minutes, it is gone.

I brought it to a Nissan dealer who is in the same "family" of dealerships from where I bought it. They replaced the camshaft variable timing gear as they said they begin to do a ticking/rattling under load. Before I picked it up they said the sound was gone and it took them approx. 8 hours to close the work order.

Well, the sound is still there and has not changed in ANY way.

I will need to bring it back to them early next week AGAIN, but does anyone have any insight or experience with it?

The sound is like a valve ticking sound.

Thoughts?

Could just be that the valves are loud. Not uncommon in SE-R/Specs.

Is there a valve shim issue and gap? My concern is that this will prematurely wear on the engine etc. I am planning to call the dealer again Monday to get them to look at it again. Am I being paranoid? I need this puppy to last me a long time. Thanks: e3

No harm in being paranoid. Assuming it's still under warranty, you might as well have it checked. I'm just saying it's probably nothing. I'd probably be paranoid too.

Well now the Nissan dealership does not know what to do. They have a call in with the local Nissan Service Rep for the northeast area. When he calls back they feel they will need to have me bring the car in, let it sit overnight and have him come and start it, listen etc and determine what to do next.

If they say it is normal, then I am uncomfortable and may have to get a bit loud myself.

Anyone else out there have a similar problem or valve noise etc?

Thanks: e3
