This is my 2nd 2006 M45 sport. I do not recall hearing this noise with my first M.

After a long drive and with engine off, I hear ticking noise for about 5 minutes during the engine cool period.

Is this normal? Any of you out there with the same experience?

TIA

Depends on where it is coming off. If near the exhaust or other metallic part that is cooling down, things will ping, pop and tick for a while ... very normal, I would think.

Now, having said that, what is the frequency of the ticking? If it is rapid, continuous, persistent, for the entire 5 minutes (or more), then I might be more concerned/confused about it.

It starts out very fast and becomes slower. Sounds like metal is contracting and expanding. It also makes the poping and crackling noise as you stated.

It sounds like normal contraction of metal parts. I will make an effort to look into this today and see if other ones here do it.

If it sounds like something out of the ordinary you may want to get it checked just to be on the safe side.

I also was getting the ticking noise in the winter right away after I would put the car into a warm garage but in the summer it was gone. Seems normal to me.

Mine does the same thing. I thought is was just the ticking from the exhaust pipes cooling down.

I'd like to know if any one else is experiencing this?

Good to know that I'm not the only hearing things. Please take a moment to see if this happends to your M as well.

Is this something that the dealer can correct?

If it is just hot metal stuff cooling down, then I doubt that they can correct anything here ... it is probably very normal.

But, you might want them to make sure that the lower engine heat shield is properly attached, etc.
