Ticking noise in 5th gear under load

I've got an 84 4x4 Z24 5 speed that I drive to work everyday and just this week started to notice a problem when in 5th gear. When under load something is making a loud ticking noise. I can't tell quite where it's coming from but it does sound to be coming from the engine compartment. It only happens when applying the gas in 5th. If I'm coasting down a hill with 5th engaged the noise stops but soon as I reapply gas it's right back.

Any thoughts on what it may be?

I have a somewhat similar issue, however, its when in any gear, but low rpm. I was a little worried, it actually sounded like real bad valve tick. I found the cause to be a cracked down pipe leaking, coming from the exhaust manifold. I temporarily taped it up, and problem solved. For some reason, it wouldn't make any noise at higher rpms, just basically at cruising speed. Might not be related to your issue at all, but i cant hurt to check.

Tough to say for sure, but if it's only when in 5th gear then it is almost for sure a tooth out. Mine ticks constantly in 5th gear so I just run 4 gears and have oversized tires. It seems that these trannys frequently have these problems. Let us know what you find.
