ticking? gets louder with throttle dies without gas pressed?

just bought a hatch with dual cam in it. Dude said it was knocking it was not so I talked him down to 300 bucks. will crank on first try with a tap or 2 from the gas pedal starts is very loud almost toy machine gun type sound that gets worse consistent with pressing the gas pedal and when I take my foot off the gas it quickly drops to 1100 rpm or so then chokes and dies.. wtf?p.s.swap later on anyways this is a starter car for my brother so I just want the ka in it for now

there could be alot of different things wrong with it, it could be rod knock, valve lash (valves need adjusment). ur exhaust manifold could be leaking or loose and cause a noise on the dying after starting it could be a vacuum leak, check all the hoses make sure there not loose.

thanks I'll check I guess the noice will only be figured out after I tear the motor apart
