Ok, I just noticed a "ticking" noise coming from ?underneath" the engine area. I cant quite tell where it is coming from, but it seems to be loudest from beneath the engine as opposed to above...? I just tried to change the oil and add some CD2 additive/treatment/detergent to try and quiet it down a little. But after my test drive around the neighboorhood, it is still there...? I can hear it the best when I peek my head under the car, or when the hood is up and I stick my head down by the engine? What could this be? An exhaust issue? The transmission? Lifters? Rockers? Any ideas? It sure seems like just when you finish fixing or improving One thing Something else pops up that requires attention! hehe I enjoy it, but my wife thinks I am obsessed:)

Any one have a place for me to start or for something to look for?

Exactly what kind of ticking sound? Tapping? More of a rattling sound?

Could be your timing chain. Thats what happened to me. Try to hear if its coming more from the front than the rear of the engine. Do you know if the tensioners have been replaced yet?

Yeah the tensioner has been replaced already, last year. and the noise is a ticking, could be described as a tapping i guess, It seems to be from the middle of the engine, more on the Intake side, and Not really on the Exhaust manifold side. Haven't replaced timing chain yet, and do have 155K on the car already. HMMM? Any ideas?

Its your timing chain :) Trust Me :) Be on the safe side, replace the whole set, pick one up from a Advance auto for like $80 and have someone install it, its alot cheaper if you buy the parts.

How do I find out if it is the timing chain for sure? I listened to it more today and determined it may be more of a rattle/tapping? Timing change or Lifter?

just listen very carefully to the engine. If the sound is coming from the front, it is the timing chain most likely. Not to mention that at the mileage your car is at, your chain should need a replacement. Its just one of the complaints that all 240sx and altima users have about their engines eventually. And personally i would describe the sound for the timing chain as a rattle/tap.

Well you have to look at it, Nissan = Dealership = Expensive, and yes its around $80 for the whole set, Chain, Sprockets, tensioners, and some other little piece. I have priced em, Advance Auto. Well this is for the SOHC. The DOHC is $299.00.

yeah i have a DOHC and that price i gave you was the one i can get DIRECT FROM NISSAN. I dont have to pay the retail cost due to my connections with the dealer. That price i gave ($198) is what the dealer's cost is, so i guess that makes me feel a little better...

it could be your lifter, i have a tapping noise and like 4 machanics told me it was the timing chain, a friend opened it up and found it was a valve lifter, we ran the engine with the head cover off. i was told you can run on a bad valve lifter for a fairly long time, but i dont drive my 240 anymore anyway. the sound i have almost sounds plastic, or like water is bubling through it a little bit, and when i step on the gas a little it goes right away. good luck =)

When I step on the gas the noise seems ot go away too. Don't know if it is because the rest of enginge noise gets louder, but it does seem to go away when I hit the gas. Can't notice the ticking/or wahtever from inside the car only from outside? Can a noisy lifter be easily fixed? or replaced?

i can hear the ticking from inside the car, its as loud as the idle, so i can hear it all the time. as far as i know, no, a lifter is not an easy thing to replace, if you did one you might as well replace them all, and i wouldnt even bother with it unless you are getting other preformance mods inside the engine as well, just run on it. it might still be your timing chain though
