I've just recently started noticing that I'm getting a ticking noise from the turbo when it's cold. After a few minutes of driving, the ticking goes away and the turbo pulls fine. When the ticking sound is present and I try to hit the gas it sounds almost like I have a large boost leak. The oil lines been replaced and it's a jdm vg30det turbo. The sound was also present in the stock turbo so I thought the turbo was going, that's why we replaced it. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I've had bad exhaust gaskets make that sound. Did you replace the gasket between the turbo and the manifold?

thanks for the reply. No we didn't replace it because it didn't seem to have any damage done to it but maybe we should have? Does it sound like it could be a exhaust leak after describing that after it warms up it doesn't tick at all?? Plus the sound the turbo makes when the ticking is present?? Think it could be an oil pump/pressure issue??? when we checked the oil lines there seemed to be fresh oil in the lines and turbo. thanks for any help!!

ya, if it goes away when it warms up it sounds like gasket to me. as it gets hotter the gasket will expand and potentially fill any leaks. i have the same problem w/ my exhaust after my sloppy install lol!

Check the gasket in between the head and exhaust manifold to.

Beware, you very well may snap off some exhaust studs like I did.

I did find that I had an un-detected leak from my exhaust manifold after I had pulled it for other reasons.

If your manifold is good and straight, not worped you can use permatex copper sealer. No need for a new gasket!! Just clean off both surfaces and apply about 1/16th inch all the way across! I have never had a leak with mine using this permatex.

I used it on manofold and turbo. Just my O2
