Cruise set on 74mph, I-71 southbound 50 miles south of Cinncinati, a local Sherrif comes sliding sideways through the grassy median then up in behind me accelerating wildly, I thought, surely that guy is'nt coming after me, 74 in a 70, normally I set it on 79 for a limited access road, staying under 10 over for a simple warning from a state trooper. Pass them hiding running radar and not even notice me at only 79. Not this time. This guy pulled me over, took my license to his car and I waited for this Carolton co wanna be for 15 minutes before returning with a ticket stating I was running 77 in a 70 with a 177 dollar price tag. Tried to talk to the guy, he walked off, jumped in his car and right back through the median slinging grass. Felt like my 04 black roadster had turned into a candy apple red vette. Instead of just paying the fine, I called the DMV at the states capital the next week, they laughed. They said that was very unordinary, suggested I call the Carolton co District Attorney which I did and left a message. She called me back within 2 hours informing me she had "benched" the ticket and as long I had no others in that county for 90 days it would be history. I told her I owed her lunch and have a great day. I live 2 hours from that county and drive 2 over when traveling through there now.

My only other encounter, a light turning yellow at the bottom of an interstate exit ramp, a local city guy got me, told me it was a 300 dollar fine. He told me I ran a red. I replied I ran a green turning yellow. He let me off with the verbal warning.

Since, I've removed my old Uniden detector from my 5.9 zj on 33 x 9.5 inch tires and installed the detector in my Z. Mounted it to the top of my rearview mirror getting power from the remote door opener plug on the back of the mirror.

Ha, I don't know what to say about that. Congrats on getting your ticket benched, I guess. :p

I almost got one this weekend, but a mustang saved me by trying to race me with a POLICE OFFICER pulled off on the side of the highway about 50 or so feet in front of me. I was going about 11 or so over the limit and this stang gets next to me as I'm braking and just floors it. (Lucky me, because the cop pulled him over into a gas station and made him pop the hood, checked for illegal mods, etc. -- I just put HFC's, Intake, Spacer (not that he would see that), and exhaust... lol)

Is it true the police can't search your vehicle without a warrant/probable cause? Does that work for what is under the hood as well?

I see more cops on the 75/71 section then I see anywhere else. Similar to 75-N from Cincy to Dayton. I have traveled the I-71 L'ville to Cincy circle constantly for the last 7 years and have been very lucky to have not been pulled over. I usually do 80 the whole way.

I would assume so... unless going fast is probably cause? I dunno.

I do notice that a lot of people fall for the "You can let me look under the hood now or we can come back later with a warrant and let the techs tear through the car looking for mods, etc." You know, just scare tactics to make you agree. Anyways, I think I'll investigate this matter further.

If the cop hears a blow-off valve, or a blower, or even a modified exhaust....just anything other that stock....is already probable cause and gives him the right to search your hood and car. My uncle is SDPD and i ask him these kinds of questions all the time.

the only thing he can't search without consent is a LOCKED glovebox.

Yah I thought so too, but that's a gray area. I guess I was trying to figure out if there's somehting more concrete. I mean how does the police officer know what's stock or not... and should that matter? Let's stay you have the nismo sport exhaust... can they pull you over for that? even though it's factory fitted? ....

I guess you should keep a folder in the car with all your CARB approved mods, but I don't know if an officer will take the time to talk to you. From what I see, if you don't hurry up with your papers... it's a taser right to the face...

cops can pull you over for anything...if they want to pull you over, they'll find a reason to...i hate it...then once you're pulled over, anything he/she sees, smells, or hears, is reasonable suspicion for the officer. It really up to him to either: a) let you go with a warning or a fix ticket or b) pop the hood and let all the skeletons fall out of the closet (if there are any). That's the price you pay for modding. But that sh*t isn't gonna stop me from putting goodies in my Z!

That stuff never happens here in Ohio. i have never seen or heard of anyone getting pulled over and asked to pop the hood... What can they do for whats done to your car?.... Even turbo, i mean, i would say " ok i'll pop the hood", and if they pointed out a turbo or something, i would be like " you like that, thats sweet aint it".... i mean whats that all about. they can't see test pipes from there and if they could, how would they know the difference between them and hfc's without actually testing them... Must be a west coast thing. Us hillbilly's don't know about all that...

In cali where i'm from they'd tow your car to the impound lot because it won't comply with california emission laws. Cars with modified intakes without carb sticker or aftermarket turbos and superchargers, and catless exhaust systems are banned from public streets and highways. Basically anything that would mess with emissions are illegal.

dang it sounds like cops are pretty crucial in cali.... in Louisiana there just ur normal everyday ahole cops.... me and a buddy of mine were chylln at our old high school game and a cop walked past our cars and told us if we left we were getting tickets for modded exhaust and that he would search engine bay for others... i was like wtf....so we parked our cars there over night why do they even care??? not like louisiana is up for the best state in the U.S. or something....

I guess since i live in a state where i can't drive my car year round they leave us alone on the days we get to drive. Speeding is an issue but the city cops and the sherriffs are more worried about the drunks and leave the speeders up to the highway patrol which is kind of nice. But township cops are d*cks and so are highway/freeway cops.... I just have my own little joy rides outside of town where there are no cops, or you can get away from them easier.

You are lucky to get out of that ticket. I would drive the speed limit if I was going through there.
