so i was driving home from franklinville nj and i passed a cop hiding off the road. I looked in my mirror n saw his brake lights ( him shifting out of park) and he started following me. i knew i was screwed. He put his lights on a min later n pulled me over. He said he pulled me over for my tint. its only 30% so w/e. i dont really care. its not a moving violation so ill pay the fine n get it over with. my question was though if any1 knew the laws in nj? do they make u take the tint off? Should I plead guilty? Any suggestions or experiences would b helpful. thanks in adcance.

I got a tint ticket in Suffolk County at a car meet. Just my luck. The wacko gave me a 60 dollar tint ticket. Didn't have to remove it. Honestly, it's just a way to make revenue for those cops - it's better for them if you have the tints on! I know jersey cops are stricter when it comes to tints but I can't see it being much of a problem. Just pay the fine and keep on going!

Franklinville cops are known for how bad they are. Back when I had my lifted truck I made it a point to completely bypass that place for fear I'd get pulled over from my tires sticking out 1/2" further than they should have.

I'm from this area and I'm rethinking tinting the front and just doing the rear 3. NJ laws suck.

At the inspection station, razor in hand, they will do it and probably scratch your windows

First of all, you should not have gotten a court date. You should have been able to pay the fine online and been done with it. However, when I got pulled over for doing 102 in a 40 (hehehe) I was at court and some kid got a ticket for leaving the neons on under his Jaguar.

The protocall is that you will can receive up to 3 tickets for it. A 4th time you are required to provide proof that you removed the tint and present it to a prosecutor/judge. This is in the state of NJ. I have 15% all around, and I have only been pulled over twice for it, but never given a ticket (prob bc I have PA license plates).

Also, they won't touch your windows at an inspection station. And if you're smart, you will get it done at some small little "Mike's Auto Shop" place. Inspection doesn't cover tint. The tint is the responsibility of the authorities. I have tinted every car Ive ever driven, never once gotten a ticket, and never had any issues come inspection time.

At the municipal court, just plead guilty and take the fine. Don't argue it, or else the prosecutor may worsen it. I pleaded guilty to speading. Now, the cop did me a favor and wrote 92 in a 50 because he knew my cousin. When I pleaded guilty, the prosecutor changed it to 75 in a 50 - I walked away with a $250 fine and 4 pts instead of losing my license for a year, amid needing to take classes.

I hope that helps Altima_Coupe. I know winter in NJ sucks b/c all the loser pigs are all over tinted windows, especially troopers. Good luck in court!

I think it's like $60, round about figure... I'm not too positive because I've never gotten one for tint, only speeding

Friends of mine have gotten a ticket for tint, and I believe it was around $60 in NJ.

In New York it's $50 per window. I got busted for unsafe lane change, cell phone, and gave me a ticket for each tint included the two mini rear windows. This was w/ my VW. I got the tints removed and got them redone and they dropped the tint charges bc I paid $120 for the tints, the tickets were more then the tints.

I've received 2 tickets already for tinted windows, but it's only $25 here in Chicago, so I don't really care. Good luck!

Altima Coupe, are you planning on attending the Englishtown meet on Aug 23rd and 24th? If I see you there, I hope I don't see tintless windows!

And Kuhan - damn. You have 35%, at least you can be seen inside you car. I have 15% all the way around (except windshield of course) and I never get hassled. I haven't been pulled over for my windows since March 07. I tell the cops I catch professional shoplifting groups by staking out in my car, and they let me go lol (that's only part true)

Be happy you don't live in Michigan. It's illegal to have any tints the the front 2 windows like alot of other statesbut the state has change the laws so that an officer can issue a ticket for tints w/2 points.

I used to get harrassed with my 03 Alti. I had Limo Tint (5%) all the way around and I had the windshield done too (35% Mirror Tint), I had gotten pulled over twice in a one week period of time. Even with a Doc's note....If you run into the wrong officer, Your Doc's note is not accepted by him/her and she can issue a ticket w/points. Each Tint ticket I got was no less than $120......2 of the tickets I had recieved were with points.

Good Luck.

I snapped this picture while visiting a friend recently. Apparently I parked in front of a police officials home - and the marked units were visiting the official (and not me )- they didn't seem concerned with my 30%s.

I live in PA so im not sure on NJ, but heres my little expirence with window tint and cops.

I had 20% on all my windows and 35% on the windshield. All the sudden the police wanted to be clowns and start hassling people because they needed the money. So I get pulled over on my way to work and the cop wanted to give me a $108 ticket for each window. Then decided he also wanted to hand me a $108 ticket for each headlight eyelid, vynil strip across the top of my windsheild, tinted license plate cover, and sticker on my back window. So $108 x 11 = $1188. On top of that my insurance company never sent me a updated card so the one I had on me was expired. So he took that as no proof of insurance and tacked on another $300 some dollars. All this happened in about 15 minutes, I was like......ummm what? Luckly I was able to talk my way out of it with the cop for about 30 minutes. He ended up giving me a month and a half to take the tint and everything else off or he said he will be giving me all the tickets. That was a couple months ago, and now that the heat has died down it's about time for everything to go back on.

Hopfully all goes well at your court date and you dont have to take it all off

one of my friends recently recieved a ticket for tints and it was i think almost 100$ with fees. they gave her 1 for front and 1 for back. btw she has 35% tints all around the radar rated at 29%. cops in nyc could be an *** sometimes.

so my court date was a few days ago... i showed up n spoke to the prosecutor.. and since the sergeant ( the one who gave me the ticket) was there i spoke mostly with him. this was my first ticket for tint so i didnt know if i just had to pay the fine or remove the tint... so I hadnt removed it before the court date...so the sergeant saw my car and says " Not only are you going pay the fine for the first ticket, Im going mail you another one for today."<< << my first fine was $56..and with court costs it was almost $100..so today i got the second ticket in the mail..on the ticket, the location of the offense says "court parking lot" lol. the officer told me this ticket would be for double the amount of the first one. i was pretty pissed. franklinville cops suck.

by the way... we need more angry icons ^^

See now that right there is messed up. I'd be like **** you im not paying it you didnt pull me over as my car was not moving. I dont see how they can give you a ticket if its parked. Thats like saying a cop can just walk down the street and put tint tickets on cars like parking tickets. Lame

I would fight it. Just be honest with the judge and say you didnt know if it needed to be off or not and you were kind of confused with the whole situation and you were hoping to find out when you came to court that day. Then just say all the officer had to do was tell you it needed to be taken off and you would have but that point was never made clear and assure him you already started taking it off. DONT drive your car there this time though! ha. If they really get into it and ask why isnt your car in the lot then say a family member went on a road trip that doesnt have a reliable car and you wanted them to be safe so you let them borrow your car.

But yea, I would definately fight it.

you can just do what i did...totally forgot about my court date till 30 min before...showed up late. luckily he was just going thru all the ppl there with traffic violations in alphabetical order by last name and mine starts with n and i was pretty close showing up at k but anyways while im sitting there waiting my turn i get on the internet on my phone look up a car similar to mine same paint and everything (since he has the description of my car written on the ticket) i zoom in so the tag isnt shown and you can see there is no tint on this particular car and just put my phone to sleep. when im called upon i pleed guilty and said i was unaware it was illegal and removed the tint the same day and showed him that picture as proof and he dismissed it and i was free to go. its been 8 months and havnt been pulled over again for it.
