Hello,

My car just recentl;y started making a thumping sound from the rear wheels when braking. It doesn't do it all the time. I would say around 50% of the stops I come to, and it doesn't vary between hard and normal braking. It is a whump-whump-whump sound that seems to increase in speed as the car comes to a stop. It is definitely coming from the rear and most likely the rear passenger side. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? I have a 1992 coupe. I searched but could only find a lot of instances where a thump happened when shifting. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Micah

Dood, one of your wheels is coming loose. Check them asap. I was working on my brakes and just barely tightened them on the left rear tire. The next day when i was applying the brakes or making a turn, I would get a loud thumping noise. Thank god i stopped to check when i did.

Car: That would be obvious....

Could be rear subframe bushings giving way. Check them for cracking and such.

haha it wouldnt just happen while braking if a wheel was loose..this is most likely your rear rotors have become warped due to heat/age. just go to any place that does brakes and have em turn the rotors on the lathe. should work like a charm

it could hapen when the wheel is getting loose b/c then the rotor wouldnt be tieghtened all the way down, and one side would be farther out than the others. it would be kinda like a warped rotor. thats why you tighten the lugs in a star or cross shape

I would say it's the rotors that are warped as well.

I guess it would depend on how loud it was. I knew right away it wasnt rotors.. lol.

yep, always good to do the star pattern, i have always done it and i have done about 40 break/tire/allignment in my auto classmy teacher was factory trained by renault and knows all the little tricks like that and interlocking 2 open/box end wrenches to get more leverage

oh, ya they make us tighten in a star pattern, i was saying that i never thought that if the wheel was loose, you would feel it only while braking...
