I have this thump noise at times when I take my foot off the gas pedal. Took it to the dealer and they said it might be the electric coupling and need to remove the driveshaft. I have the gold preferred extended warranty but of course they say THIS is not covered. Any ideas would certainly help.

Does the vehicle jerk forward as well?

How about mote info: speeds its happening at. Age of car. When did it start etc?

This could be chain slap in the cvt

No, the car does not jerk forward. It happens at about 30 - 40 mph and my Rogue is a 2008 with 97000 miles and the extended warranty runs out at 100,000 miles. What is chain slap? I did ask if it was transmition.

if its happening at 30-40mph then its not your differential clutch, as its already disengages at 6mph.
what you probably are feeling is either worn motor mounts, or chain slap from the CVT transmission.

your cvt transmission has a metal chain/belt that connects two ever-changing pulleys. if you abruptly let go of the petal, the engine's power gets cut, that stops spinning the input shaft of the transmission as fast as it was spinning, before letting the throttle go, but the pulley on the output shaft of the transmission is still carrying speed from the vehicles inertia - so something has to give right? that chain that connect the two pulleys in the transmission flexes and causes a slight cut in power as the engine/transmission catch up with the inertia and when the steel belt/chain is forced back into its normal position it causes a thumbing noise.

How dangerous is it? Does that mean a new transmission? Which would be covered! But how do I tell them I know more than they do?

it doesnt mean automatically a new transmission. play it by ear and see what they say. i would inform and remind them that the coupler disconnects after 6mph, and that there is no way the coupler would come into play at that speed unless the car sensor wheels spin.
