I have started to hear a noise coming from the front of the motor in the vicinity of the timing cover. The noise is only audible when the car is in drive or reverse. The sound is not coming from the transmission. The most recent event that could have started problems was the AC seizing. I had to cut the belt to continue driving. I also have had the timing belt, water pump, cam seals done within the last 6 months. I returned to the the mechanic that did the timing belt. He stated that he doesnt think that it would be the timing belt as the noise would be prevalent even if the car wasnt in a drive gear. He speculated that a motor bearing may have been damagd when the AC seized. I'm looking for input before we start ripping things apart

Can you describe the "thumping" in more detail? Frequency? Pitch?

Your tech should be good for a year on labour so I would think that front cover has to come off ASAP for a look see. This is highly unusual. Did the tech look at the motor while you held the car in gear? I would think a bearing would make noise in or out of gear.

the noie is rotating with the motor. It really sounds like a belt noise. very low in pitch. not like something that is solid. It almost sounds like exhuast escapping but you can feel the noise a well as hear it. could the belt tensioner be misaligned causing the belt to wear poorly?
