There is a thud sound coming from front right area of car when i go over small or large bumps. Sounds and feels like something is hitting the floorboard in front passenger seat. This sound is also made when the engine is started. Sort of like a rattle but a deeper sound than a rattle. I have two theories. Bad engine mount, or bad rack. Replaced strut assembly three days ago. No difference in sounds. Any suggestions/ideas?

If it makes the sound when you start the car, it's definitely not suspension. I would get someone to start the car while you observe the area where the noise is coming from. If it's coming from the right side (passenger side), I would suspect that it is an issue with the drive belt or one of the accessories/pulleys.

I've got the same problem except only when going over bumps at lower speeds, not when the enginge is started. It's especially noticable when the wheel is coming off of uneven pavement to a lower level. They resurfaced my street and where the new pavement stops theres a good 1 1/2" drop. It's driving me nuts. Checked engine mounts & replaced sway bar end links. Jacked it up and pryed at everything - could not simulate noise. Almost sounds like a loose wheel, (it's not). Around 72k on the car. Any ideas?

In your case, it's most likely the struts. And it's just gonna get worse over time.

Not to dispute your recommendation, but I can't discern a problem with them. No leaks, the push test is fine and with the front end jacked up I can't simulate the noise by prying up the front wheel and letting go. I guess I'll wait till spring, (assuming it doesn't get real bad beforehand), and replace them.

i spoke with a relative who is also a mechanic and he said the previous P/S fluid leak I had may have caused the engine mount bushings to swell and breakdown, therefore causing the engine/transmission to bounce around at the mount and make the noise. Taking it in today to check the mounts for damage.

Certainly possible, PS fluid is very corrosive to rubber components.

mechanic told me the front motor mount by the radiator was bad. Bushing torn. Told me the part would be 250 bucks. Not including labor. I thought the bushing was only a few dollars. Does any of this sound right? I can probably replace it myself.
