Not long ago my transmission started making a funny noise... Its a whining, almost grinding constant noise, and it only disappears when I depress the clutch pedal.. as soon as I let the clutch engage again, the noise comes back, it seems to be coming from the transmission somewhere but I dont know where... is it possible its the throwout bearing? i heard these only make noise when you disengage the clutch.. not the other way around.

Thanks in Advance

Okay so I've been told its the main input shaft when the clutch is released, and someone else said it was when the clutch was depressed. Someone else said it was the throwout bearing, and someone said it was most likely the "rear countershaft bearing"

Can anyone give me a straight answer with any certainty?

I've got a transmission from my KA24E, 89. I'm in SoCal, not sure if I want to ship that beast.

No no, its your throwout bearing. It makes the noise, then you press in the clutch pedal and it stops. Yes, throwout bearing! And no dont **** your pants right away, going and rebuilding your transmission. Mines been doin it when i got my 240sx 12,000 miles ago and the noise has not increased any and there have been no negative effects. A good friend of my dads and a good mechanic told me that its no big deal unless you start to have negative effects. So he said jus ride it out and replace it when you get a new clutch, and i should be fine!

How much of a job is it to replace the input shaft bearing? Or just better off getting new/rebuilt/junkyard transmission?

Thanks... ;)

well I took the transmission out and had a look... neither the main input shaft bearing, or the rear countershaft bearing are bad... both are still good... HOWEVER, the gear directly behind the main input shaft bearing at the front of the transmission has a TOOTH MISSING from it, and I found the tooth lying on the bottom of the transmission casing. Could this be what was causing the noise? I was told the only bearings spinning when the car is in neutral with the clutch engaged, are the main input shaft, and rear countershaft... so if its not those two... what else could it be?
