Well I think this is the end of my 240? Over the weekend, I noticed that when I downshifted i blew white smoke out of the exhaust. Not 10 minutes later it was dead. Towed it home, started it up, checked the oil and it is gray on the dipstick. Gunmetal gray color. The engine knocked horribly when I started it. IF there is an upside, it's that from what I could tell, I didn't blow out any fluids. Any thoughts here? I called my local dealer and they want $4000 installed for an engine. That's more than what I paid. Suggestions and thoughts appreciated. Is it time for it to go???Thanks, Kurt

time for sr swap!

Unless you feel like stripping the engine down to the bare block and examining/repairing it.

I would just toss out the engine and swap in an sr, or get another KA. $4000 is a lot considering everyone charges that much to do a complete sr swap.

Edit: If you do decide to toss out that engine, do you wanna sell me the pistons if they are undamaged? I'm in the quest to build my 200hp n/a ka24de motor :)

$4000 is also alot for used engine.

a KA rebuild usually runs around $2000. you can probably get it done cheaper if you do it yourself.

In swapping a ka24e engine, does it have to be from the same car in the same year, or can I take a ka24e engine out of a Stanza and put it in since it is the same model number. Do you think any adjustments would need to be done. I, unfortunately, probably can't do this work myself. The headgasket possibly, but the rest, no way. Could anyone tell me the steps to replace the head gasket so I can decide for myself if I can do it or not. Chilton's is no good with this. Another option: I can get the same vehicle here locally for $500 bucks. The engine has 98,000 miles on it. It needs the transmission rebuilt. (yeah, I'm not a fan of automatics either). Use one for parts and drive the other?? Probably worth it???

Actually I think an engine swap is a lot easier than doing the headgasket since you don't have to take apart the engine. You just remove all the lines the engine is connected to and pop it out.

Although I havn't done an actual swap, I don't see how difficult it could be if you write down the lines/nuts/bolts you disconnect and label them.

Thanks for your suggestions. I found a local garage that will install an engine (30,000 miles on it) and a new clutch for $1125. Figure I can't beat that deal!

Seeing as how I paid 1000 for the car, a new engine is like getting a new car, so to have 2125 wrapped up in this really isn't all that bad.

Thanks again!

Well since your going to swap out your old engine, would you like to sell me the pistons out of the old engine if they are not busted up?

if you're dropping these in a dohc for more compression then i suggest you use new pistons. they're not expensive at all.

I'd be happy to sell them to you, but I don't plan on getting the engine back as it is useless to me. Nor do I want the added expense of the mechanic having to fish them out.

If i was doing it myself, I'd certainyl entertain offers. Sorry!
