Today i was driving searching for some of the elusive drift washers and my check engine light comes on. So i get home and pull the codes and i get a 12 and a 33!

So i look on the faqs at 240.org and see that for cali only models that is the air flow meter circuit and the o2 sensor. So my question is do i have to replace both or does one directly affect the other making it throw the code for both of them? Also is kragen and autozone the places i should be going to now for these parts? Or nissan? thank you

Nope, gotta do them both. The air flow meter costs an arm and a leg new, try to find a junkyard one that works. O2 sensor is only $25 or so at AutoZone, get that there.

Ok update... after i read the codes i put her back together and i started her up. No check engine light. I unplugged the maf and the car did the usual idle to about 2k and then almost sputter and die... did that until i plugged it back in! So that leads me to beleive that it might not be the problem? nissan wants 500 bucks for a new maf lol:eek:

looks like im gonna go see my friend at the junkyard tomorrow!

Hey Ronin, how do you check the engine code? Does autozone do it for free?

The ECU clears it's diagnosis codes after you check them.

If it was a MAF error it would have immediately popped back up cause the signal would be incorrect. Drive the car around at run it up all the way to redline at least once when it's all warmed up. If the MAF works fine then it will continue to not give you a code. Also, before you run the car check the connector for buildup or a loose fit. Clean the connectors the best you can.

As for the 02 sensor. It's just something that likes to go out on cars. Pull it out (1" wrench) and shake it gently. If you hear the piece rattling around in there and/or visably see it's broken then you need a new one. However before you run off and go spend $25 make sure it's wiring and connectors are in good condition. If it's black and has alot of excess fuel built up on it then you can take some Gumout Carb Cleaner and spray it down to clean it out.

Nismo_freak, I thought the code stays on unless the problem is fixed or unless you manually clear them using mode IV on the ecm. I have a 1990 240sx maybe this is different for other models?

Also, I've checked the code for my ecm and it gave me a 32. If there are more than one problem causing the engine light to turn on, how would the ecm show this?
