Well, here goes, today I was on my way home and my car started to cut out... I pressed on the gas pedal but nothing happened and i kept pressing but it eventually stalled out and while moving i got it to start back up again and I took off... a half mile down the road it dies and i was able to swerve into a parking spot at a paint store. I checked the ECU and it read code 14 and 21... I have no idea why It threw one for the vehicle speed sensor, it's working fine... anyway... LUCKILY I was able to drive 20 minutes to home without it cutting out. Later, after lunch I came back out to look at it ... I had it idling for about 10 minutes and all the sudden it dies. I crank it back up and it runs for about 5 and dies...crank it up again and then it runs for less than a minute and dies. Now I try to start it and it's not starting at all... turning over but no start... i'm not getting a spark at all. I do smell fuel. THe guy that i bought the car from put a big honkin Accel coil on it that was meant for a V8, i dont know why he did it... so does this sound like a bad coil? Please give advice.

Sounds like fuel starvation. But you might be right about the coil. My book says Code 21 is " Ignition signal missing in primary coil."

thanks for the info. I'm going to take my coil down to auto zone or something and have it tested out. If it's bad... i/m hitting up the junkyard and taking the stock ignition coil and the wiring that the dude chopped off, thanks!

Get a stock coil and install it. Also consider replacing your fuel filter. Oxygen sensor and temperature sensor. Each one of these components, if they haven't been changed before, play very important parts in the way fuel is delivered to the engine on the 240 sx. The O2 sensor tells the ECU if the mixture is too lean or too rich.Recommended change every 30K. The temperature sensor tells the ECU if it is starting cold or hot so it can determine how much fuel to deliver to the injectors. The leads on this one are commonly the problem because of a corroded connector. If you smell fuel, and it is not a fuel leak, then it is flooding because of these sensors.

It's not the Coil...It's the Ignition Module.

Next time it happens and you REALLY need to get home, try putting a bag of Ice on the Ignition Module. The car should run for a good while till the module heats up again & cuts out.

No I think he's right about it being the coil. If the previous owner installed a coil that was meant for a V8 there will be excessive resistance in the ignition system because the coil was built to handle a higher wattage while the stock alternator puts out a smaller wattage. replace the coil with a stock coil and see whats up. run the headlight test on your car to see if massive drain is occuring on your battery during starting

I replaced the aftermarket with a stock coil... it started causing me problems after I did this post... it was bucking me around like a bull when I would try and take off in first gear and on into 2nd.. i replaced it then and no bucking since. Weird. Thank you all for your replies! :-)

So you fixed it by switching to a stock coil?
