when my clutch (pedal) is released, car makes a rattling noise, in neutral or when im driving, its really audible when i drive next to a wall or a building..but when you push the clutch in, the noise goes away... im thinkin its gotta be the throw out bearing? just hoping its not trans bearing? anyone else had this problem?

My car is doing the same thing, whirring sound with clutch engaged, when you push in the clutch it goes away. But I don't think it can be the throwout bearing, because when the clutch is engaged the throwout bearing isn't spinning, is it?

Most likely if it sounds like metal on metal rubbing/screeching then it is your TOB.

A bad throwout bearing will make noise when you have the clutch down, and go away when you release it, just the opposite of what you are saying. Its more likely a transmission bearing. Does it make this noise if the car is standing still, or only while moving?

It does it sitting in neutral and moving, as long as the clutch is engaged. Could it be the pilot bushing? Or does that usually not make noise because it's just a piece of metal?

Mine will make a noise while standing still at idle, and go away with the pedal depressed. I assumed it was the TOB because my clutch kit didn't come with one, and it was Sunday, and I just thought **** it I'm getting this **** done today.

I was going to tell him yes, it is the TOB, but if what leper says is true than it obviously is not... And I need to know what that noise is ; )

it is the balancer shaft dealies in the transmission. It is perfectly normal, so just disregard it (unless it is CRAZY loud in which case you would have other problems) if you don't believe me, go sit in a C4 Vette with an MT, they do it like crazy. Just disregard it and go about your daily life...

A tob only makes hella noise when you push the clutch in.

Cool... You can hear it when I'm idling but not real bad, so I won't worry about it...

I will listen for it the next time I'm in my C4 Vette though :rolleyes
