I bought a 89 240sx and it has 125 thousand miles on it. A week after i bought it i started hearing a weird grinding noise when i come to a stop and push in the clutch. Even if i am in neutral the grinding continues. The only way to stop the grinding is when i put the car in gear and let the clutch out. This doesnt happen every time i stop. It shifts really hard into second too. I was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is. I am getting ready to pay 700$ for a new clutch assembly and throw out bearing. I will be dissapointed if that does not fix the problem. Can anyone help me???

$700? Parts and labor? Sounds a little high.

Stock clutch: ~$120, incl. pressure plate/cover, disc, throwout bearing.Flywheel machining: $25

That leaves $555 dollars for labor, in which case you're getting ripped off.

If you got quoted a price to fix it then you took it to a mechanic right? what did he say it was....to me it sounds like the throw out bearing is making that noise but let you mechanic diagnose it so if his repairs dont fix it he is at fault not you...that is if your paying for labor for someplace...

Two things:

Yes, your throwout bearing is most likely shot. Since you have to separate the transmission anyway, replace the clutch, pilot bushing and pressure plate too (any kit will have all these). Don't forget to surface the flywheel.

The hard shift into second means that your transmission needs new synchros. Common on the 240. You MIGHT be able to get away with simply changing the gear oil to a high-quality replacement. Some even have friction modifier in them to help older transmissions. Or you could simply have it rebuilt while you have it out and never have to worry about it again. Somewhere near 500 bucks at a reputable shop, parts included.

My car is getting a new slutch kit at the moment. The shop said that the clutch has been replaced before and they didnt have the flywheel re-surfaced so i am getting a new flywheel as well. The whole thing is costing me 700$. Maybe this summer when i am working full time i will have the money and will have the transmission worked on. Till then i will try some redline MT-90 gear oil. It will be a few months till i have the money even for that. Man i am broke!!!!!!!! Thanks for the advice though.
