I recently did a transmission swap in my 240 because my old transmission wouldn't shift anymore. threw out the old and in with the new and while swapping we noticed that i needed a new throwout bearing. we bought a new one and installed it. put the car back together, bled the system and as soon as i started the car it made a grinding noise. as soon as i pushed in the clutch in it stopped. also driving in every gear(even reverse) it makes a loud grinding noise EXCEPT for 4th gear. i think it might be the Throw out bearing again but how could it be? it's brand new.

are you sure the trans you swapped in was good? you said new but was it "new" or new to you...
also, did you install the fork correctly? and the metal clip/spring thing that goes on it. i remember that being a pita for me to get in the right way.

The problem is inside the trans, most likely you need to put new bearings in it. When you put in the clutch you stop the gears from moving inside the trans. I forget the theory behind 4th gear not making noise, I think because its a 1:1 ratio it just locks the input and output shaft together and doesnt send any power threw the counter shaft. If i was a bettin man......which I am, I would be replacing the counter shaft bearings. The throwout bearing would grind when you push the clutch in.

edit............you do have fluid in the trans correct?

OK I dont think it is our throw out bearing cause that would only make noise when the clutch was pushed in. Also you said the trans makes a grinding noise in all gears but 4th, now in 240's 4th is direct drive meaning the input shaft is hooked directly to the output shaft bypassing the counter shaft (which is what all the other gears are on. So that being said I think that the bearings are going out on your trans and your best bet is to probly pull the trans and pop off the cover over the input shaft and check out the bearings cause it sounds like they are damaged. That is what its sounds like to me, hope this was helpful.

The Trans is new to me and i installed the fork the same way it came out.

i used 80w-90 that nissan gave me. i read that you're suppose to use 75w-90 but i figured a difference of 5 wouldnt kill anyone. would it?

Thanks guys. i had a feeling it wasn't my throw out bearing. i guess ill be dropping the trans and opening it up.

I honestly don't remember really. I've done it twice, but it was along time ago.
