Had to pull the intake off of my car this week. As I was doing so, I noticed this monstrosity tee'd off the pipe right before the throttle body.

So, I disconnected it from the intake pipe and unscrewed it from the fan shroud. Then ran to the parts store and picked up one of these bad boys.

Sorry it's not in the package, I already had it in the pipe before I took the pic. Basically, it's a freeze plug. A plug of rubber with a bolt going through it and a washer on either end. When you tighten the bolt, the rubber expands laterally and fills up the area that it's in (don't tighten it too much, you'll crack the pipe ). When done, it will look like this.

As far as the difference in the sound, I don't know yet. Once I get done changing these 1801928341 four inch long heater hoses and get the car back together, I'll post my impressions and try to get a vid clip of the sound.

Yeah... i took at piece out today when hooking up an eletric fan.. even though you have to disconnect it with an aftermarket intake.. it just muffles the sound I guess... But, I need some of those rubber things!... what are they called, and what store did you go to? ... I haven't even looked yet, but I don't want to look like an idiot.

I dunno which parts store it came from, I sent my little brother out w/ the intake tube and told him to find something to plug it. That's what he brought back. I'm pretty sure it's called a freeze plug, b/c it's actually designed to go into an engine block.

actually, that resonator box helps with mid-range tourqe. it smooths out the torque band

I removed mine when I was putting in a new radiator, I have noticed no difference in sound or power.

Uhm, no it doesn't. It reduces noise. That's why it's called a resonator.

they are temporary freeze plugs .. u can find them in any parts store. come in different diameters.. i used these for stock side mount bypass valve location.

Sooo then this will give you no more of an agressive sound then?

I finally got the car cranked again yesterday and couldn't really tell a difference, but it does help remove some clutter from the engine bay. Also, there's no way that thing wasn't disrupting airflow.

I removed mine when i was replacing the whole front my S13. You dont really notice the change in sound until you really get on the gas. At around 4000rpm at WOT, the engine sounds like the boxer engine out of a WRX

Is that with both resonators removed, i.e. the one on the front of the air box and the one we are talking about. I already have the one off the air box gone and was wondering if removing the secondary resonator will give me even more of an aggressive sound.

Also, what about that freeze plug does that have a thread on the end of it, and if so wouldn’t that cause turbulence in the intake hose? I think a rubber cap would be better if the freeze plug has a thread of it.

on a previous car i owned, it was customary to remove the intake silencer just as you have. so i did, but then i read seomthing about it and how is helps the mid-range torque curve. so i took my car to a dyno with the silencer in hand and tried 3 runs with each. to my suprise, horsepower was up with it out, but, when it was installed, the torque came on quicker and was flatter. a flat powerband will beat out a peaky band any day of the week. i'm not saying you have to put it back in or you'll be slow, i'm just backing up my claims in my earlier post.

The freeze plug does have a bolt running through it, and a rubber cap probably would be better. But parts stores don't carry vacuum caps that big, and I wanted to go ahead and get it going.

You know, there was a discussion about this once upon a time, long long ago.

It was decided then that this "resonator" as you call it is nothing but an air badder that allows more filtered air to be available in a half to WOT situation. The FSM doesnt even give a name for this part. bleh

Its more of a throttle response thing since we have such a freakin long intake tube.

According to the parts microfiche, it's part number 16585-53F00, Resonator Assembly.
