Well - it seemed like a fun project, so I tried it out. I cleaned my TB yesterday. Heres where I got most of my info: http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/517... good site. My car is a 96 i30.

Project was super easy (I wouldnt consider myself a "mechanic" but I like taking things apart and cleaning them up)... Result: Well, not sure there was any quantifiable benefit from this project. The car felt a little better, but its probably pyschological :). I'd like to think it will keep my car running a bit longer though... its got 117k on it now.

I'll try to post some pics (since I know you guys like that kind of stuff)...

my next project is to replace my knock sensor - my ecu has had a 0304 code for several months. I have one on order and will hopefully attempt that next weekend (with the help of some long tools!)

And Finally, a cleaner butterfly plate! :) Hope it helps - if not, I had fun anyways. Next up, Knock Sensor replacement!

Yeah - I scrubbed behind the plate as much as possible. With my flashlight, I could see into the upper intake... its SUPER dirty in there... maybe another weekend I'll tackle that project (somewhat more involved!)...

[/quote]Is it confirmed that the knock sensor goes out? I have wondered this because my '93 J30 with 92k miles seems to knock and keep knocking under heavy second gear loads (going uphill in third, not shifting to 2nd). I would think it would retard back the degrees, but it does not seem to. Is there a way to test the resistance to see if it is in spec? It is not a constant thing, just in that situation when I am pushing the gas right on the verge of where it would downshift. -Rob 93 J30

Ok, I have a question. My j30 has been idoling a little rough. At a stop light it does not stay consistant. It will be reving at about 1k then just drop to like 300RPM. What could cause this? Anything that I can check or clean that would really make my car run better?ThanksChris

Chris, I had that happen to a pickup I owned. The idle would race and then vary to almost nothing. Turned out the throttle body had so much crud built up on it that the butterfly plate could not close properly and the computer was going crazy trying to compensate. Keith
