Two of the greatest artist in the past 50 years, and arguably all time, are now gone. So which album is the best to you, Thriller vs Purple Rain. And Princ's ability to play every instrument is not a part of this. Just the albums.

Purple Rain by a decent margin, and it isn't even Prince's best album.

Hat tip to Chevy for a well done tribute.

Production on Thriller is vastly, infinitely superior.
It's not even close.

Anyone who disagrees with me will get their lunch money stolen.

Gonna have to give the slight edge to Thriller - However, there's something to be said for a LACK of production. It's so overdone these days, there's really no reason to go to a concert; just to be disappointed.

Production has its place in a recording. You strive to create acoustic perfection. Quincy Jones is amazing.

You go to a show for a live experience, for vocal, visual, and instrumental athleticism, something emotionally and dynamically very different.

But yeah, so many artists can fart it out in a studio, hand it off to post-production engineers, and screw it up in real life.

Heck, even Rebecca Black can tolerably make a recording.

If you're asking which is better produced or the bigger selling album, the answer is obviously Thriller. But, if you're asking which is the "better" album to each of us, that's purely subjective, and more a case of what type of music one prefers. I was not a big fan of either artist, but no argument both albums were landmarks.

I feel conflicted. When I made the thread, I was Thriller all the way, plus I'm a bigger fan of MJ. However I started looking at the actual songs on the albums instead of the albums themselves so to speak. And I have to say, I love Purple Rain. I love 5 songs on both albums (9 songs in total on both ironically), and like 1 more on thriller. HOWEVER, when I actually dive deeper into the songs, the Purple Rain songs are deeper, lyrical, emotional, and timeless...to me. Example, I love Thriller and Beat It, but I feel Purple Rain and I Would Die For You lyrically and emotionally. I rock Billy Jean, but I'm emersed in Darling Nikkie. I bump PYT and jam because of the base line, but get crazy with every instrumental nuance of Let's Go Crazy.

Production value, no question Thriller is better, but not really looking at production, engineering, and mastering...just plain and simple better album. I'm now going with Purple Rain.

I'm just thinking now I'm going to make a playlist of MJ and Prince...call it M.J.P. Lol.

I so agree, but I think it's more that the majority of the artists today and songs are garbage lol.

While I'm a far bigger Prince fan and don't really like MJ all that much (save a few selected songs) to be fair, MJ's "best" album isn't Thriller, it's Off the Wall.

I had the pleasure to watch Prince both semi-early and later on in his career. When I was in (West) Germany I got to see Sign o' the Times (twice even!) and I caught him in Chicago o the Musicology tour. He was better as he hit older but the younger Prince was no slouch. I doubt I'll ever see a better live performer.
