and a new Fram paper filter after reading this article someone posted on the Q45 forum. The previous owner had installed it and an adapter, but gave me the factory filter box he had saved when I bought the car. I was wondering why my engine oil was so dirty last time I changed it. The article says a K&N or I guess any filter that uses oil to trap dust will let in about three times as much dirt as a paper air filter will.http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=180100

Also, I don't want to be bother with buying a special kit for $13 just to clean and re-oil it, I can buy a paper filter for that price and not be bothered with the mess and time and effort to clean it.

My engine seems much more powerful with the original air filter and filter box installed instead of the K&N air intake and filter. Its a noticible improvement. Maybe because th K&N was clogged up, which the article says they clog up faster than a paper filter, or maybe because with the K&N you are drawing hot air in from inside the engine compartment instead of cool air from the front of the car that gets rammed in through the ducts. I didn't try to figure out where the air come from with the original setup but there is a black plastic duct that leads to the front of the car which I figure forces air in at a higher pressure than just sucking it in from the engine compartment with no ram effect.

OK, so I guess there is no ram air effect. So where is the final opening, sounds like it would be in the wheel well or inside the fender?

Barometric pressure is the ram effect.Read up on q45techs post. He's the master. Turbo or blower is the only way to get more pressure.
