well....damn. On the way to work, doin 75 down the interstate, and all of a sudden, i have no power and a hear a loud TAP TAP TAP. I take the car out of gear and it immediately dies. I coast for a bit, throw on the flashers, and hit the starter just to see if it will even turn over. Starter doesn't budge an inch. Luckily though, i have enough speed to coast down an offramp and into a gas station (couldn't have gotten any luckier i thought) let it cool off, and it starts up. Upon further inspection, its definitely a rod going pow pow in there, but it hasn't broken all the way loose yet. So, i need a ka-e now. To make the day worse, i call to get a ride from work only to find out that my fiance is in the hospital cause her and her mother were rearended on the way home....hard enough to tear the rear quarter off an 88 volvo. Her brother came to get me+broken car and towed it back to the shop.....and then left me at the house...so now i can't even get to the farking hospital to see how she is.......

just an update for anyone who wants to bother to read another dead ka story. Got the motor out today, tore the bottom end out. Turns out that i spun a bearing and the rod damaged the crank in the process. The bearing was wayyyy toast, in fact, over 50 percent of it had managed to what looks like melt past the endcap. On a good note, the rod didn't come loose, and the pistons/cylinders look good so far. Later the head will be pulled and we'll see if this thing is worth rebuilding, or if i'm gonna just go get another motor. Swapping a dohc seems like a good idea to me.

sounds like my spun rod bearing, thats what i thought when you said it was making that TAP TAP TAP, like an anvil almost.

mine melted just like yours, it kinda looks like a gum wrapper.

my head was just fine, and i wouldn't be surprised if yours is too. Is the crank so damaged that you couldnt get some oversize bearings and just machine the crank?

you sex machine, actually i just hooked all that up today, i'll put the battery and the fluids in tomorrow

wait, upon further investigation, i realized you're not Andy at all, you're my other RB26 hero. No, i rebuilt Andy's motor and just put it in my 92 hatch. It was the dirtiest KA possible. your engine was destined for better things, its going in my coupe... that and i only have the fifth gear synchro, so i dont know how much longer this transmission will last.

yes, it was number 3. i am finding out that this is apparently a large problem with ka24e's. all the yards around here have ka's with the same problem. I didn't know the rod bearingswere weak, but i do understand why number 3, its the thrust one. Argh....i hate looking at my car on jackstands waiting for a motor....i wanna drive it damnit.

My guess would be that in a inline four the #3 cylinder runs the hottest. If you check out any of the Honda sites alot of guys have problems with the #3 in their inline fours.
