So i was looking at some stuff on the web about switching out your stock rb oil pump gears with chromoly gears keeping the rest of the stock oil pump. Now the only people i know who sell this set up is RHJ but for like $650.00. My thought is why can't you get your oem gears replicated by a good machine shop with chromoly for a ton less then $650. I know it wouldn't beat any aftermarket oil pump but would be a good mod for a person with a budget and knows a good machinist... thoughts?

I suppose I would ask you "why?"

the reason the stock gear can crack is due to lack of surface area on the crank snout. A proper fix involves repairing the crank. Stock pump works fine for 95% of us, I am not concerned. I did have the flats elongated though.

By the time your all said and done, its less than 650 by far. Just takes more labor obviously from your end.

And the answer is:

To beat the s*** out of it, as most people will do.

Seeing this is the most popular drift car by far it isn't uncommon.

I am a huge advocate of proper oiling system on an RB, but this seem to be an early GTR mostly.

Although the narrow oil pump drive on RB cranks from 89-93' can benefit from the wider drive collar for sure.

Its the ones that will be pounding the car sideways, off the rev limiter that will really benefit from:

-Chromoly Crank collar

-Oil pan baffle

-Head-drain modifiction

-Chromoly gear replacement. (Good for those who have a stock oil pump)

In retrospec, this is way better then shelling out 1200-1800 buck for an RB oil pump. That's the beauty of a gear-set.

And I don't know why a good machine shop couldn't mill out some chromoly gerotors, because essentially, that's all they are.

Here's a local Maine Gerotor Manufacturing plant.

the crank collar is a must most defthe gears would be a nice beef up of the stock oil pump for the people who don't have the dough for all the crazys...im doing a rebuild now so doing that sounds a bit easyer... and yes down time as well as labor +merterials but i plan on pricing it out see how much that would run me...

Whatever floats your boat I suppose. You should consider having multiple sets made to sell a few though.

I thought you were trying to work around the snout issue... sounds like you have it under control.

FYI GTRs13... My series two RB25DET also had the short crank snout.
