So, Chicagoland finally got the first taste of winter a couple days ago. And, through it all, I'm quite impressed with how my car handled. I got to work before the snow came down and left for home after most of it was on the ground (3-6 inches total). Some of the streets were plowed, most of the back streets that I took home were not. There was some slipping, but not nearly as much as I would have expected. I didn't notice any problems when I came to a stop, and corners were slower than normal, but not as slow as I normally took them with my last car.

And, I also learned an interesting science lesson as well. My windshield had been hit by a rock a while ago, leaving a very tiny 1/4 inch crack in the middle of the windshield about 2 inches up from the wipers. When I went out to get in my car yesterday, I noticed that the crack was now almost completely across my windshield. Stupid cold weather!

Same thing happened to me with my old car because I kept putting it off until winter finally rolled around. Once I get my Versa I am going to be sure to get that sort of thing fixed right away to prevent it from happening to it.

It could also happen during summer. Winter is not the determining factor. =)

The spreading of the chip to a crack could be due to the weather. Water gets into the chip and then the temp drops and it freezes. When water turns to ice it's volume actually increases. So the water in that chip could have caused it to become a crack by expanding when it turns to ice and causing more damage.

Water freezing is actual a major cause of rock erosion. Where the weather allows water to freeze.
