I was surfing craigslist a couple weeks ago like I usually do looking for Q45s cheap. I traditionally buy them as engine donors for other projects. While surfing I came across a 92 White/Tan Q45 with a bad transmission, "Perfect!" I thought. Well, after a short drive to Allentown PA with the wife I was on the way home with a G50 on the trailer. The owner was asking $500 and we got it for $300. Very very clean, inside and out. We decided to fix it and keep it rather than pull it apart. It was too nice to part...

The car didn't have a bad transmission, it had NO transmission The previous owner took it to a shop to be repaired, they pulled the trans and I'm assuming he got a bit of sticker shock when he got the repair quote. Rather than pay to have it put back together he had it towed home with no trans in it.

That didn't bother me much, less work for a trans R&R if there is only one R. I put a jumper wire in the inhibitor switch plug and the car fired right up, ran like a charm. I called up a local, reputable, wrecking yard and bought a used 122k mile 94 trans, converter, and driveshaft with a 6 month warranty for $400. I bought an external framerail mount trans cooler from Summit and 12 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. I let the converter drain overnight and then installed all the goodies.

I know Tech and max are going to come in here and tell me that a converter drain isn't good enough, a flush is the only way to go, etc. etc.

I don't care, I have $850 into this car now and it's a blast to drive and looks fantastic. I'll post pictures tonight.

Yea, so now I have a S14 with a VH, a Z32 with a VH, and a G50... my buddies are starting to wonder when I'm going to pull the 5.7 out of the Tundra and put a VH in that too, lol.

Oh yeah, after work today I'm on my way to the undisclosed location where we keep our parts Q's to pull the TCU out of a 93 donor car and the rear swaybar and exhaust off of a 92 active car. (Both of these cars are severly damage as to make them not worth repairing, please don't view me as a Q killer) The new Q has a header-back custom 2" exhaust with a pair of flowmasters and high-flow cats on it. It's a touch too loud for my taste. This car was built to be a silent cruiser and I'm putting a stock exhaust back on. If anyone wants this exhaust I'll let it go for $100 or $150 installed, local only.

After all that, I do have one quesiton I guess... 93 TCU in a car with a 94 trans... thoughts?

The mismatch combo usually seen is the converse. A later year TCU [first gear start on an older 90-92 transmission].

Since regardless of the mismatch the TCU sets the shift rpm/speed........I would think 1st and 2nd gear would shift early by 4-5%.

Normally a 93 would shift at 48 and 88 mph whereas a 1994 would shift higher say 51 and 93 mph.

At least with this combo you won't hit redline before TCU shifts.

Thats good news... kinda what I figured.

I'm definitely swapping TCUs though, the 2nd gear start with the taller 94 2nd gear is killer...
