I have a few of those cuts that had something like thin black leather looking tape over them on the driver's seat above the controls. They were there when I got my truck 4 years ago. Since then I've used Leatherique products to keep my seats soft and conditioned. Leatherique is expensive but well worth it. My next project is to repair those little rips (but in 4 years they haven't gotten any bigger because the leather isn't dried out anymore).
The driver side seat in my '06 Maserati looked pretty bad when I got it. I patched it up and spot redyed it using Leatherique products and it looks great now. My '04 Maserati had the same issue before I had it redyed. So it's not just American or Japanese or whatever. All leather seats will get trashed if you don't care for them properly. But the plus side is that leather is pretty durable, unless your seat is completely shredded, the leather can be reconditioned to look pretty darn good without the expense of a total reupholstering of the seat.
I'll post up pics of my project when I get around to it.
