I decided on the ATI All-In-Wonder 9600XT video card and I got it today. I went to install it and the fuc*er doesn't work. There are dotted horizontal lines all across the screen, the display is all messed up, and it says video card faulty or somet shiat when it goes to load the ATI software. So now I have to call the place where I bought it and get a new one. ARGH!!!!

Man thats a bummer thats usually the luck I have.

Before you go and get another one...Try the below steps.

*This is a must you have to uninstall you're old video card drivers before plugging in the new card and booting up and then install the new drivers.(if you don't do this you will either get a blank screen or some really funky display)

*Be sure that the card is seated into the AGP slot firmly.(if not seated properly this will cause the condition you described)

This has happend to me before and these were the two issues that took care of the problem for me, I hope maybe its that easy for you.

I tried doing that, but I'll try it again or get my bro-in-law to help with it. I hate computers. I pulled the card out again and placed it back in, but maybe still not right. I think I deleted all my old drivers, but not sure. I deleted the one that sid NVIDIA something or other....are there more?

just take it back to where you bought it from, if they dont take it back and give you a new one, ATI will replace it for you, warranty is there for a reason.

But if the cards fine and it's just me being stupid, I don't want to have to deal with all that.

Goto Start menu click on RUN type in Control and this will open the Control Panel Double click on System then click on the tab Hardware and then click on Device Manager.

Once that opens see if there is a +Display adapters

Let me know what you see there.

Ok click on the plus sign, then right click on the nvidia and select uninstall. Turn the PC off and put the new card in reboot, XP should recognize the new card and all will be well. Theoretically anyway.

Oops got ahead of myself. Uninstall everything listed in the Display adapter category. Sorry I didn't make that last post to clear.

Could be an onboard display adapter. You previously had a display adapter installed in the AGP slot right?

If it is an onboard adapter built into the motherboard you can disable it in the CMOS setup.

Does it show to be funtioning properly or is there a question mark next to it. If its there and you don't have a PCI card then it will be safe to uninstall it. If there actually is something there then XP will attempt to reinstall it on a fresh boot after uninstalling.

Just go ahead and uninstall the device's in Dispaly adapters and power of, install the new card and reboot.

If you can tell from the crappy display did windows recognize the card and attempt to install drivers for it? If not there has to be a software issue or something else. It is so rare to get a defective card, but I'm not saying it can't happen. Try to wiggle the card in the slot with the power on. See if the display flickers at all.

I installed the software and it recognized new hardware. When I reboot it says no ATI card present or card defective (when trying to start the ATI control panel). Bad card?

I guess I'll have to call ATI tomorrow after work and see if they can help me with this. Have to also call the place I bought it to find out what I have to do to return it for a new one if it is bad.

Sorry I wish it would have worked out. I can't think of anything else that it could be. ATI will probably have you do the same thing but hopefully the place you bought the card at won't give you any grief about exchanging it.

Best of luck with it.

Is the NVidia GeForce 256 32MB any good? I'm replacing an ATI Rage Something 8MB AGP card.

I'm running the Geforce FX5500 OC 256MB and am pleased with it. It is not a hardcore graphics card but it has been able to run everything I've thrown at it. If you're going from an 8mb card just about any card yo go with you are going to notice quite a difference.
