Well I've had my Versa since June and love the thing to death. Well I was basically living off of social security checks from my dead dead-beat dad (Harsh, but honestly you don't know the half of it. I'll get into that later). So I was receiving letters that I wouldn't be able to get my checks anymore until I register for classes for the fall term. I'll be a freshman in college. Well I finally finished registering, so I called SS and they tell me... "Collection for social ends with graduation from High School"

So why would I get letters telling me I need to have proof of being a full-time student...?? I asked the lady over the phone and she said you have to be a full-time high school student...

And again

So I could keep it, but I would be very tight on money and basically living off of the little I have in my savings... So the future of my V is not very clear right now.. I just needed to get that out.

Hopefully a life lesson was just learned...don't rely on Uncle Sam to foot your bills.

Your SS ends after high school, because Uncle Sam knows you are capable of working. Going to college changes nothing. You wanted to go to college instead of work. Since you are now free to work without the mandated schooling, Uncle Sam is saying get a job. Some parrents do the same with their kids.

I am surprised you parent(s) didnt make you get a job while still in high school. I know mine did.

Of course it might also be a good idea to pay Uncle Sam back for all that money as well. I would encourage looking into the military as a possibility. That way you can keep your Versa and still be able to go to school free and clear. Just a thought.

Don't count on the military to actually pay for your education though, especially now. They're not very good about keeping promises they make when you sign up.

Okay, I was pretty tired when I wrote that and thought about it when I went to sleep. I do work, I just left that out. I work at After Hours Formalware. Tuxedo shop. Sorry, Didn't want you all to think I don't have a job. Lol. I'm actually running late for work as I type this.

And a little side note, I've been considering the military for quite some time. My step-dad was in the Navy, and its kind of what I was brought up around. He's currently in North Carolina going to school for this civilian contracting job in Iraq.

And with the job and school, I don't nearly make enough to keep the car. Plus with my father gone I'm trying to balance all of that and watching over my family. I can only work so many hours a week because of school. I mean I could probably pull it off, its just way to stressful right now. I was really angry when I wrote that last night. So I was not thinking too clearly.

I worked all through college... both full-time work and full-time college. It sucked, but I did it, and had a 3.7 GPA to boot. Even made the honors list on two separate occasions.

It sucks, but it can be done... Just buckle down and do the best you can. If you need to sell the V and pick up a cheap used car... so be it (i'd suggest an old Sentra or old Subaru. Probably the cheapest, most bulletproof cars you can find). There will always be Versas when you get out of college, and we will still be here. So will you, probably, because this forum is addicting. And we don't chase off owners of other cars.

Ha, way to rub the 3.7 in.

Things can work out in the end. I'm stupid when I'm angry and type. I usually have a better outlook on things the next day. So, sorry about that pointless rambling. Hopefully I can work to keep the V, if not... Then you're right. I can get something else and the V out of college. Thanks for the help everyone.

I'd say go to college and live off of financial aid and some loans, if you can.

Or, if you prefer, get financial aid/scholarships, no loans and work while in school.

are you still going to make it to NOPI??

If you do, I'll buy you dinner one night... I know what it's like to be a poor college student and I don't mind ;oD

I worked two jobs while I attended college. There were many weeks when the last five bucks I had went for gas in the tank or Kraft mac and cheese.. The difference is I drove a $500 beater car for two years and another $800 beater car for the other two.

It was only until I was in my mid twenties that I bought my first new car, the cheapest car I could find, a Chevette without a radio, four speed manual, and vinyl seats. Got my first credit card then, too. $1000 limit.

Going to school takes sacrifices. It also takes different priorities. Many here I'm sure have done that and will attest to that. I didn't expect to buy a new car when I was in college. Furthest thing from my mind. I needed the money for school, food and rent.

Wow Thanks Kimber! I may take you up on that. This is why I love this community. People are great and always helpful. So thanks again to everyone.

I actually got some good news today. Since my Dad is going to Iraq and since we're going to be in a much better living situtation then I thought, they actually offered to pay for the majority of it. I don't like my parents to pay for anything. At all, but honestly, I guess I need it. Its not much for school then I originally thought either. I'm thinking of dropping my full-time title to part-time now realizing that I wont get social security. I'm doing this to be closer to my family now that my Dad is gone. My brother will be home alone a lot because my mom works full-time still, so I think its best to take it slow for now. Put my family first.

And I originally got the versa because of social security checks I and my family thought we were going to keep getting. Otherwise I'd still be in my POS 91 Celica (never mind, the engine blew... I'd be in something worse! lol!!)

I just learned a lot about myself in this overnight fiasco... I react to quickly to certain things and I should really take the time to analyze the situation. I guess I just made it seem worse then it was. So thanks again to everyone, I feel stupid now.

awww... we've all been there, don't worry about it!

I went to Berea College because my mom was downsized while I was trying to pick on a school... (Berea is the poor kid's opportunity school... but they make you work for it!)

See ya in Sept!!
