I was looking in the fsm because I'm having maf issues all of the sudden.

In the MAF section it shows the shielding being grounded. Where does this ground to? If mine isn't grounded can I take some wire, solder it to it, and ground it to the chassis?

here's the problem, If i unhook my n62 it runs but rough (like the maf is unhooked duh). if I plug it in, it starts, runs, levels off at 700, sputters and dies. Fuel pressure for that split second is fine. vac at 700 is at 19-20. The tune is fine. Plugs are new. Ignition cool. tried an n60 on different settings, nope, j60 nope, same effect.

Voltage is at .59 and 1.2 when blown through. The e-manage measures it at .2v in and out.

What I'm thinking is that the GN coil's magnetic field is creating interference. But does that create a difference in voltage? I don't know exactly how that works.

i was going around a turn in my neighborhood when it started to screw up on me....

The shielded maf wire serves as protection from high voltage ignition coils.. They produce lots of interference and can even induce a voltage change in the wires, so your deductions were indeed correct.

Essentially the 'shielding' wire is just strands of conductive metal which surround the signal carrying wires in a constant electrical ground. This isolates them for the most part.

Yes you can ground to chassis.

BTW- Good post! This is a shining example of how questions should be asked!

What? Has anybody else ever heard about this?? I understand the theory and everything, but has anybody else ever heard of this kinda problem before?

I was actually redoing my MAF wiring yesterday and ran across my ghetto-rigged shielding (aluminum foil). Back in the day, a lot of the MAF problem threads mentioned shielding of the signal and ground wires to the ECU. If they are not properly shielded, the voltage reaching the ECU will be affected and the car will run crappy.

Shielding is a conductive metal wrapped around the wires and grounded to the chassis. It theoretically absorbs the field and grounds it.

from the factory, if you follow the maf wiring back to the ECU, you'll see where the shielding ground wire comes out. it's then grounded on the body by the ECU

really, so then it is important to bolt in the ecu? I grounded the shielding at the maf side and it raised the measured voltage to .35v ran a little better but same thing. I'll try grounding it at the ecu side. I think there is a break in the shielding. If this doesn't work I'll redo the harness for the maf.
