Is the american 200sx an S chassis or is it built like a 2 door Sentra. Thats what it looks like to me.

i believe the 200sx prior to 1989 was an s chassis. it was an s12. after the 240sx came out all the 200sx built after that were on the sentra chassis

S14 derrick is correct The S12 was the last S chassis 200sx in the USA. Now all European and Australian S13's and s14's were 200sx's the S13 was made with the CA18DET from 89-93 and the S14's had the SR20DET.

Depending on the year, the 200sx was produced also in 95-99 as a 2 door sentra(b14u if built in the us, b14x if built in mexico), with a fwd sr20de. 79-88 200SX is pre s13 and is the s110 and s12, and is a rwd car.

88- 90 S13s had CA18s

91 - 93 were redtop SRs

94 - 98 were blacktop SRs

and 94 - 96 S14s had notchtop SRs

97 -98 were black top

mostly correct. the s12 200sx is branching point of the 240sx and 300zx.

fyi the american 200sx also had ca20e's and vg30e motors

the 200sx was the starting point for the 240sx and the NISSAN 300zx

pre 90 the 300zxs in the US were labeled DATSUN

OK that is correct for japan but not the rest of the world. the 200sx in england were all CA18DET for the S13 and they were hatch backs no coupes were produced.http://200silvia.blogspot.com/

I think some of you guys are over thinking this. I think the op is confused by the fact that Nissan had two cars by the name 200sx within a 10 year period, but one was RWD and the other was FWD.

The RDW one is part of the S chassis family. And the FWD one is part of the B Chassis/Sentra family. See pic, above ^.

The thread is finished. There is nothing more that needs to be said.

I was hoping it would be me to post the two pictures but alas:

My dad told me he wanted the 83 DATSUN 280zx but instead he got the new model the NISSAN 300zx thus Papi Chulo wins.

ty to papi for the information i tried to write out yesterday (net went down lol). early 83-84 was the nissan datsun change, some maximas of those years has the nissan maxima by datsun logo, or something to that effect. all the facts are pretty scattered in this thread but i think for the most part the question was answered. the z31 was 100% nissan, nothing "datsun" about it. if you ever look up parts on advanced auto or auto zone stuff, we are still labeled nissan/datsun as well, and yes the sunny is the sentra. when i started digging into history the 200sx was a question of mine as well, its an odd and random chassis and label jump. i think the se-r would have been sufficient instead of bringing back the 200sx label.
