You may 180 degrees out with the cam positions. Set the crank to TDC on the COMPRESSION STROKE. Here's a picture of what the cam positions should look like:

When you set up your crank to intermediate and intermediate to cams timing marks, all is good until you turn the crank. Now your marks are wherever. Not really important.

It really bugged me the first time too. If you really want the marks to line up I think either 20 or 40 engine revolutions will do it (that is marks aligned to marks aligned positions - yours should take less).

Like rogoman says, follow the picture and life will be good!

If it would make you feel safer, turn until it all lines up.

All you really need is cylinder 1 at Top Dead Center. Go to Jim Wolf Technology and look at the cam stuff for yourself. The position of the cam lobes is all you need. When you put the cam sprockets and chains back on you will just wiggle the cam position a little to make everything fit.

DO NOT turn the chankshaft without all your chains on and timing good. If you move the pistons, and the valves are not moving and timed correctly, you may bend valves. Some will already be open and will hit on the pistons.

The only way to turn the crank without the cams set correctly is to remove the cams. Now all the valves are closed and can't hit. Plugs should be out for ease of turning.

While you are in there, are you putting chains or just guides?

Do you have the Factory Service Manual? Important stuff in there you will be needing! Don't reinstall cam sprockets without a torque wrench and a backup wrench.

Well, I am glad to see you toughing it out. I know it has been mentioned, but I repeat, dont worry about the colored links on the chains. Set your timing marks, turn the assembly by hand a couple of full revolutions, and go by the cam/crank and distributor marks.

Yeah thats the truth. Just matchup your crank to the TDC mark on your crank pulley and you will be fine when you put your cams back in. Those marks on the chain will line up only once in a blue moon. Use them just to put everything back together right.

Yes,

Have you pulled cams, chains, sprockets?

Cam to crank timing is set when you apply the chains. (Re-read my earlier post about moving the crank with the cam chains off, please)!. If you set to match the pics all is good. Then stab the distributor, and watch your counting direction for plug wire location. #1 is front and going CCW 3,4,2. If you go the wrong way you swap 3 & 2 and it barely runs, won't idle, smells like incomplete combustion and can really piss you off. Unfortunately I speak from experience...

Did you get the FSM sections I sent you?
