Here we see the broken stud...

The cracked manifold...

And the warped flange..

Just from experience.. is it going to be possible to get that stud out with a reversie, or am i going to have to pull the head and find a machine shop?

yeah you should be able to get that out with a set of easyouts.

What's an "easy out" Ive never heard of that before. Just curious cause my friend has a 300zx with a broken bolt on the down pipe that he cant fix due to clearence issues(cant fit in a drill). Just curious, thanks in advance.

Thats the hardest stud to get out..With the engine in the car.I had to pull the head to fix it..That what you sould do..Im sure it will turn out alot better..With pulling the head..All the room in the world.

easy out looks like a drill bit that is tapered but catches counterclock wise...... bascially if you have a stud/bolt or screws thats broken and or sripped flushed with the surface you would use this method to remove the remaining piece......

but to further elaborate, you have to drill a hole into the broken bolt and then hammer the easyout into it. because of how it catches you can then put a wrench on it and simply unscrew it. drilling the hole is the hardest part.

they have saved my *** a few times.

And to make it even easier, use a left handed drill in a reversible drill, it may back out when you get the wall thickness down on the remaining bit of stud.

what causes this to happen? I know the heat, but is it poor worksmanship or inferior materials or a combo?

East outs are your best friend. Drilling a proper hole is definatly the hardest part. Sucks that its the last stud on the head, doesn't leave much room to work in.

Pull your head and try the easyout. Just beware that the size easyout you will be using, is known to break under high torque. I tried using an easy out while the head was still in the car and snapped the easyout. Now I'm left with an easy out in my head and no way to get it out.

Well there is a way I have to take it to a machine shop so they can drill it out. Just take my advice, I was lazy and I paid for it.

no no no. Copper gasket that I got of enjuku plus thin coating of copperseal.

I think the manifold was either the old style OBX or ss autochrome. i got it un-used second hand.

my friend had one of those ebay cheepo manifolds that he got off some guy he knew. I TOLD him it was crappy but the guy convinced him otherwise...It was fine for 1 week, then exhaust leak due to uneven flange to the block, Then about another 2 weeks later, a whole section of the runner for cylander 1 or 2 decided it wanted to break through the welds and pop off on the highway. Now he's back to stock for the time being. This was on an s14 sr20det running stock boost/turbo etc. You get wut u pay for usually . Just sucks most of the nice well made manifolds are 650-900+ for bottom mounts.

My megan manifold seemt to be holding up. That sucks though. I have a set of Snap-on extractors, they work really well. I have had easy outs snap off way to ofter and these extractors have yet to let me down. You will have to pull the head which is the bad the part.

So what advice can you guys give to someone that has never removed a head before.

FSM says remove with Intake manifold.

What head gasket to get? What head studs?Should i plan on doing timing chain/guides at the same time?

i broke the same stud on my car. Removed it with an Angle drill or Small Air Drill and a set of eazyouts then used a bolt instead of a stud to replace it. No need to remove the head. Ill try to get ahold of you on Saturday to help remove it and install the turbo again.
