this is my dads new 1985 porsche 944, its in perfect condition with about 72k on it, he bought it for 4500 dollars off a guy from albany new york, smooth as hell and is the most underated car i ever seen next to the 240, but my 240 handles better due to eibach springs and tokicko's (was on the car when i bought it), the shifter is nasty though, when you put it in gear theres an inch of slop left and right but thats easily fixed.

sorry for the crappy pic, im not good with that stuff.

usually cars with the word "porsche" in them are overratted if anything. I havent ever heard a bad thing about this car other than the placement of the engine.

They aren't THAT great of a car. One of my freinds has one and it was slower than my 240 when i had the KA in it (both cars 5 speed manual). But its also a older car so i dunno, I just think for the money, its not the best package out there, but then again neither is the 240.

Now the Turbo 944 is a difforent story...

I always wanted one........ *drool* There's a black one for sale for $4900 by my house, but the interior is trashed. Maybe I'll look for a turbo one when I finish my z31. How much does a turbo 944 go for?

I'd buy a Porsche in a second if I could afford the maintenance costs. I'm not sure about the 944, but I'm sure I can work on my 240SX much easier than I could *any* Porsche. I really need to learn more about them, but stories of astronomically expensive clutch replacement jobs and other repairs common to older cars have kept me away.

I think we just had another Porsche 944 thread recently. Can't remember where or when.

yep the clutch jobs are around 500 bux i think. im not liking the mechanicals of it much either, i think il stick to my 240, because those germans have some pretty weird engineering sometimes that just makes you say to yourself "what the **** were they thinking"

They might be Porsches but they have Audi engines I believe. A friend of mine had a 924 a long time ago (pretty much the same car), he said the engine was horrible to work on and he ended up selling it because of that. That comes from a guy who rebuilt VW engines for a living. If you don't mind paying someone else to fix your car, it's not a bad deal. The 924/944 Porsches were one of the top performance cars of the '80's according to some popular magazine back then.

One of the guy's at the shop I take my car to is currently swapping a 944 turbo engine into his 924 chassis. That thing is gonna be way sleepy. Sure, it still says Porsche on it but it's a 924 body.

944 t's are great but extreamly expensive on maintanance and if not then insurance. i would get one if it wasnt for that. mainly the insurance. it costs me 2500/yr to insure my 240 w/ a clean driving record and im 21

im glad i dont have to pay those expensise's. im rebuilding my engine through an automotive program in my school called boces, its gonna be sweet, 750 bux for the full rebuild kit and then img oing to balance the crank and pistons and all that, angeled valve job, port and polish the head, put in that metal steering rack thing that gets rid of the rubber bushing, take out my a/c and then get rid of hicas. it shall be sweet and il be doing all the work so its free labor

The 944 turbo is a nice car but i think it is overrated and kind of rides on the coat tails of its older brother the 944 turbo. I used to own a 1985 1/2 (thats when they updated the interior) 944 with a turbo front bumper briefly. There is something about timing belt IIRC on the non-turbos that is supposed to make it a pain in the *** and very expensive to change timing belts. Thats why you see so many 944 selling very cheap that need new engines because of valve to piston damage. The 944 turbo is supposed to be a much less problematic car than the naturally aspirated 944.

944 is actually the car i wanted before getting my 240. guess im just into the hatchback styling.... parents guided me away from the porsche though because its expensive to fix.

kinda grateful now, because i know more about cars from the 240sx community and ease of repair for any of the cars components. and its fun to tinker with stuff and not be set back 500 bucks if you break some little thing :icon18

A girl that goes to my school has one w/ 170k on it and it smoked 2 stock 240's and a stock NA 300zx(91). It's also on 245 racing tires(don't know brand, her dad races porsches though)...so she launched from like 6k and just took all of us.
