No. Not even a little bit. The CA has no emissions stuff whatsoever.

That isn't to say you couldn't find some shady referee and slide him a hundred bucks, but theres really not much chance of a CA passing smog.

I don't know what your set up is but mine passed w/o problems.

At the time, i was running stock 7 psi (but lowered it down to 5spi) w/ ca18det maf with a catalytic converter.

Regardless it wouldn't pass a visual inspection.

Maybe he could get away with putting an exhaust manifold from a pulsar on it for inspection purposes. Although I don't know what they all look at besides to see if it has a turbo.

Turbo upgrades are known to the State of California to cause cancer in laboratory rats.

pulsar has a lot of stock emissions crap that u could make work.

OP: But I think the other problem would be that a KA24 and CA18 dont exactly look the same.

Are the inspectors actually that smart? I would think they know what to look for, but not to know specific engines

well the reason why i ask is because the s12 has a ca18det and i see them all over california so thats why i ask because if i swap one of those then don't you think i would still pass smog and the referee?

The s12 has a ca18et. SOHC. It is quite visually different. If you swapped a ca18det into an s12, it might be easier to get away with visually, but it will still have a hard time passing emissions. Come to think of it, wouldn't an 84 s12 be emissions exempt, or damn close to it?

The s12 only came with the SOHC CA in the states, the CA18ET, and the CA20E. The pulsar came with a non-turbo DOHC CA, the CA18DE. There has never been a DOHC turbo CA offered in any car stateside.

If you had a standalone you could lean it out?

my motor idles fine much leaner than stoich. I believe after 16.5 it started to let me know it wasnt happy.

Im thinking I could pass a tailpipe test.

You guys have to pass a visual inspection down there

here our in Ontario our car has to be road worthy (windhsield brakes suspesnsion, frame etc in proper order) and needs to pass an emissions test, which isnt too too tough.

Greg, thats really weird, my CA doesn't like to idle any higher than about 12.5:1. I had read it was normal for older FI engines to like to idle richer than stoich, but not leaner.

yea the base map from apexi had it idling around 14.5 roughly, and monitoring an innovate wb and trust EGT in collector pre-turbine, I did much testing in regards to how lean I could go at idle, and 85mph cruise.

I was shocked how much fuel could be pulled before idle quality drastically suffered. Between 14.7 - 16.2 (roughly) idle quality didnt differ much.

I think it would be easier to pass a visual in cali with a ca18det in a s12 than a s13, since the s12 came with a turbo 1.8L motor as an option in the U.S. I don't know how well they look, but the egr stuff on a ca18et is just about impossibe to see from above or below the car as it's tucked in below the back of the intake mani, and directly above the transmission bell housing. I think they would see "200sx turbo" and not think twice about it.Oh, and a little history lesson.....the ca18det was avail in the late year '88 s12's in Japan. Also, the fj20et was avail in the early s12's.....not in the U.S. of course
