It's a 91 DOHC

It's not the first time I've done a head gasket on a car, but it's the first time I ever had this problem. It keeps breaking the exhaust cam right behind the gear. Everything was done by the book. The first time it happened after the cams were put back in, I figured it to be a fluke thing and went out and got another cam. Sure enough though, 65 miles or so driving the car and that one broke too.

The worst part is-the car ran beautifully! It wasn't missing and had plenty of power. Both cams never broke under load, it was when the car was idling.

Any ideas? Did I miss something? I've never had a vehicle break a cam on me and as I said, the car was running great.

ive seen this happen a few times but it was while installing the cam, but check your tensioner and make sure your chain is in the guides correctly is about all i can think of

Did you keep the cam bridges in order? THey have to be replaced in the same order they came off... and torqued properly, in the proper pattern per FSM.

Might be time to replace the head....
