my tach works when it wants to. then it will bounce all over the place. ive use the search but found nothing. what causes it? is it a internal cluster problem? sensor or wiring? or should i just wire in an autometer tach.

Hard to say for sure.

It may be getting a bad signal, or it may be internal to the cluster itself.

It seems to me it would probably be getting a bad signal if ONLY the tach is acting up.

Signal should be coming from the distributor so I'll check the wires at the distributor and make sure there isn't any corrosion at the plugs.

I've rarely, if ever, seen the gauges go out but if you don't have any luck at the distributor it would definitely be worth checking out.
