you will need a hydrolic press to seperate the internal components and special sleeves to press it back together. Its not a big deal if your not trying to hot rod your car. I have heard many people use a synthetic oil to cure grinding conditions. although a recent class at nissan tech school they suggested not doing it and said if a car was still under factory warrenty,if it was tested to have a synthetic fluid in the trans when a failure occured the claim would be denied. They stated the synthic oil was allowing the syncro to slip on its brakeing suface and not perform as designed. On this issue I am kinda on the fence so heres my input. If my car was as old as yours is, it is obviously no longer under warrenty so I would be willing to at least try a synthetic lubricant to see if it has any improvement. If it got worse I would switch back to the normal gear oil and drive it till it either grenaded the trans or I sold it. If it grenaded I would hit up the junkyard for another trans and purchase the exchange policy so if anything was wrong I could get another one. I would not even waste my time trying to rebuild it as the parts to overhaul it would likely exceed the price to replace it with a used one. not to mention the time difference between the 2 tasks.
