is there a way to reprogram the third button on the key fob on an 02 qx4 to open the rear hatch glass?

I'm pretty sure there are no electronics for the rear glass. It feels like a mechanical latch to me. You would need to do a lot of custom work to accomplish your goal. What might be easier is to mount some kind of aftermarket switch and actuator but you are probably the first to attempt it.

I guess there is some electronics for the rear glass, the glass hatch release handle (page 3-12 in 2002 owner's manual), but not made into remote control.
A side note. I like to install a power back door lifter, a push button that can do the heavy job like most newer SUVs. Too expensive and too much work

It cannot be done with the factory keyless, as there is no logic or wiring for that in the factory system
It can, however, be done with an aftermarket alarm system. I know it can because I had this set up with a Viper system I have in my 2001 QX4. You can program this system to do any number of functions. Any car stereo shop can do it. They just trip the relay that controls the electronic release mechanism...the release button on the driver's door controls it. Yes, you can tap into that under the dash. I wasn't the one who installed my Viper system but it wasn't difficult at all for them. My factory system is completely bypassed. On a side note, I can also trip it remotely from my iPhone. I love it.

If you've got a Pathfinder with no electronic glass release, this isn't possible because you won't have the electrical actuator in the hatch. I've personally never seen one without that actuator but I've been told they exist. I'm used to the QX4 and all its extra stuff.
