Alright so here's the deal:I'm 15, and I recently fell in love with the z32.Currently I have a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham lined up for me to drive.

My original plan was to sell the caddy and buy a z32 2+2 auto, however I need to sell my Cadillac to get one. Problem is, the Caddy is selling well, and I haven't come across any really good deals on a z32.

So the other day I was thinking of this idea, keep the caddy and by a z31 to tinker around with and drive in the spring/summer.

I came across a 1987 Nissan 300zx turbo. It's got 160k miles on it, no rust, and runs great (from what is in the ad). The only thing my dad is a little weary on is the mileage.

So that being said, how many miles can you put on a z31 before a rebuild/new engine is needed? Also what are some common problems on the z31? Lastly, what are some things to look at when/if I got to see the car?

Thanks already guys!!

loose the caddi!

the Z31 can be a very dependable car, if it's maintained, the number one killer of Z31 and Z32's are timing belts, keep the timing belt changed and that little motor will last till at least 200k miles, possibly 300k miles!

and as someone who currently ownes a Z31 and a Z32, the Z31 is more dependable, easier to work on, cheaper to own and maintain, the Z32 might have a more modern look but it comes at a price, I think you'll be happier wiht a Z31

Mileage is an irrelevant number as long as the car has been maintained. Check for leaks, sludge, gunk covered motor, etc.

Like evilky said, timing belt.

NA Z31s are known for going 300k miles without issues. Turbo models slightly less depending on how abused they've been. It's not uncommon for turbo models to be on the original engine with 200k on them.

The idea of getting rid of the caddy is more appealing, but no one wants to buy it. On top of that I'm definatley going to want a car for the winter/rainy days so i don't have to drive the z, so I might as well just keep it. Plus, I enjoy that car more every time i drive it (a total of 3 drives so far). It may seem like a grandma car, but underneath the hood it does have a 350 v-8 so that thing does haul some @$$ and it's got a hella smooth ride.

That being side, you think 1600 is a good deal for the z31?

At that price, it's probably going to need some work.

I had 236,000 miles before a belt snapped.

And 75,000 on my current engine before head gaskets went. So who cares about mileage.

Go look at the condition of the car.Plus if this is a Ct car, its got rust/rot somewhere.

Too bad you posted the location. I might go grab it for that price.

Hey, I'm alright with a little rust, unce went to school for body work and now paints boats for a living and said he could fix stuff for me and he would paint anything I need as long as I pay for the paint itself. But you might have to fight me for it, cause I'm really interested.

the floor pans right in fornt of the rear croeemember moutns are a common rust area, also the base of the "A" pillers and the lower rear quarters are all the big problem areas I've found on Z31's in my area

Go check it out. If it isn't too rusty and it runs (at all), it might be worth buying. These engines are cheap and easy to work on. Also check the MFG date in the door... if it is later than 4/87 than it has all the goodies.
