AS said in my topic im thinking of getting a welded diff, dont have the money for the lsd. Is it a good idea for welded diff. ive done some research before and now. and nuthing really bad except for big time lock ups or constant chriping. Any new info any one can give or handout as advice for me???

If you don't have money for VLSD or other type, then do you have money for constant tires?

This is just my opinion, but if it's a daily I would just save up. If its a track car then weld away...

Tire wear isn't that bad, i daily'd my 300whp 240 with a welded diff for 3 months and I only went threw two rear tires, and i do burn outs all the time, and all that stuff. So it isn't bad if your not stupid, I'm about to drive an sr powered coupe with a welded diff daily, and I'm not changing it out till winter. winter you might want a vlsd.

Guess i should mention, I only ran burnoffs on my rear tires(always 50% or less tread), and i ment pairs, not sets. sorry for the confusion.

So no, for what i was doing that isn't bad AT all.

my main concern-most 240s probably suck in the snow...
but would the control be better in an open diff or welded?

LSD... It transfers power to the wheel that has more grip.

Open gives the power to the wheel that is slipping

Welded gives CONSTANT power to both tires at all times and does not account for turns (meaning you take a shark turn, one wheel is supposed to turn a little less than the other.. which is why welded goes through tires) meaning you will slip more than with open

Everything you need to know right here.
the-welded-differential-discussion-ques ... fferential.

If you plan on drifting, viscous is not for you. And if you can't afford a 2 way, welded is for you. It's not even bad for daily. It sucks in the snow but is much better than an open diff.

like enjoinismo said,
everyone in this city has a welded diff.
it's really not bad at all.
everyone thinks you'll go through tires so fast when that's really not the case with daily driving...
burning through tires is where allenms240's post comes in play... ;)

I've driven on steelies all winter with a welded diff AND beat the s*** out of my car and the tires have plenty of life. You'll be fine. Viscous' are too unpredictable.

i got about 300 bucks right now, maybe youre right and a junkyard might have it, everyone says its bad because of the tweetin or squeaking and others say its not bad. Maybe a welded is the way to go, i mean i dont have to worry about snow either really i live in forsyth county GA

I love my welded, had one in every one of my 240s! Not bad at all, as mentioned above as long as you're not doing a u-turn not that bad. Or taking turns on a black top thats a little loud too. Oh and yes rain plus bald tires plus highway..... heh gotta have good nerves. :bigthumb: otherwise I think its really truly awesome

Ok, good. Because there are some people who dd with a welded and don't even drift.
When I get a welded I'm not going to daily it, I'm going to switch out the diffs at the track because I work long hours and I get out at after 12pm so I don't feel like thinking about driving.

:slap:

this topic is surrounded with so much hear-say and myth just like the cut springs topic....

as long as you drive like a normal human you never have to think about the car coming around on you in the rain or dry. As long as you keep decent tires on it it'll be fine.

I DD my welded WITH cut springs and i dont go through tires in an ZOMG alarming rate. Sure your not gunna get 30k miles but face it, we all drive low rider imports and we all do burn outs and drift and generally beat the piss outta our. I slide my car and beat on it all the time... and you know what. i still have plenty of meat on my tires.

IMO the way we drive affects tire wear WAY more than a welded.

besides its cool to pull into parking spaces and hear the chirp chirp and every ones like omg whats that and you can say oh its because my car is a drift car.

What a stupid thread. Why would some NEW information that has never been discovered from running a welded diff come out of nowhere?!

I know all of the drawbacks of a welded diff and the only thing that concerns me is spining out because I'm not always going to have good tires. I also want to do alittle sprinted driving once in awile and I don't want to worry about spining. And its not like it takes that long to switch them out anyway

ok...ill start here.....open difs only help you to take the apex of the corner with minimum stress to the tire..imo..thats all there good for...lsd's allow for the apex and lock as you power out of the turn..they are pricy and need maintinace from time to time..now..a welded diff gives equil power throu the turn cousing the inside tire to slip slightly due to the rate at wich it turns compared to the outside...but..allows for a faster responce as you exit the corner due to the fact its allready in a locked position giving you full power to both drive wheels...as for the U turns...just power throu them and slide the car around :)..works for me!..allso...go into the turn from the widest angle and the car will naturally slip allowing you to hug the apex and power out sooner..jmo...welded all the way!
