I am thinking of buying a maxima for my first car and was wondering what everyone has to say about them, if they are reliable , fast or w/e or n e thing else i should know about them, and also how a 98 maxima will compare to a 98 jetta vr6 if anyone knows because a jetta is the other car i am thinking of getting. Thanks

I've had my Maxima for nearly 6 yrs now, and I am 100% satisfied with it.

My vote goes for the Maxima... although the Jettas are nice. But we're on NICOclub.com!!! so......

Welcome!

Maximas are respectably fast stock. A 98 should run mid to high 15-second 1/4 mile. The VQ is torquey, which makes it pretty quick off the line (especially on the "butt dyno") and means you've ALWAYS got power when you need it.They're very reliable. 200,000 miles is nothing for these cars. They have the occasional minor electronic or electrical issue, but there's really nothing major you have to look out for. Mechanically they are unstoppable.

As for Maxima vs Jetta, we're obviously going to be somewhat biased, but I honestly can't think of a single area where the Jetta is a better car than the Maxima. It's really not a fair comparison for the Jetta, though. Jetta's A LOT less car than the Maxima. Passat vs Maxima would be slightly less one-sided, but even there I'd recommend the Max.

if you care about reliability, stay away from the jetta. they are piss poor from my experience.

that and the maxima is really a better overall car (but as minister said, its not necessarily a fair comparision). go for a 5spd max!i would say that you could break axles if you drive it hard. we had to replace axles in my wife's old 93 se and my mom did as well in her 97 se. but still, most FWD cars will need axle replacement at some point.

Well, considering I have a 98 Maxima, I felt I should chime in here. My car, bone stock, ran 15.3@90mph in the quarter mile last year. I have since upgraded the intake, exhaust and suspension. I don't go a 1/4 mile at a time anymore though because I have recently realized the cars potential for auto-x. I would imagine if I were to take it to the strip again, I'd probably be looking at high 14s or very low 15s. The car has very respectable 60' and 1000' times for a 4 door "family" sedan.

the reason you should get a maxima is so that you can come hang out with the other northwest maxima guys over here

other then that, I'm on my 3rd maxima and I wouldn't want anything else. I also don't like vw's so maxima > vw

I second what NSRA32 said. I was out there with him when he was auto-xing it. The Max can hold it's own out there. It's not a "fast" car, but it's definitely quick, and with the mods A32 has, it can be considered fast and it'll handle damn good too.

I've always had respect for the Maxima (I used to have a 99 Infiniti I30 Limited - same as a Maxima). The engine is bulletproof and the car is damn reliable overall. As for the Jetta, the VR6 would be a safe way to go vs. getting a 1.8t, but a 98 isn't the best idea. If you want a Jetta, go 2001+ with the VR6. But even then, as great as the MKIV Jetta's look, there's no way I'd take one over a Maxima. Well, unless it was a GLI VR6

Get the Maxima. This coming from a VW owner...
