I have always been a fan of the E38 bimmer. Love the somewhat boxyness and love the lines. The G35 is great, but I now have a 1975 Datsun 280Z with an SR20det under the bonnet. So I now have two sport cars (and a jeep, cant forget the jeep) and like I said, Ive always loved the 740. So my buddy recently bought one. Black with black interior. Gorgeous car and is one of the most comfortable cars I've ever ridden in. I have a friend who imports and exports cars. And he goes to a lot of dealer only auctions and there are some clean a** cars there for pretty damn cheap.

So what do you lads think? sell the G35 for a 740iL with roughly the same amount of miles (80,000)?

I am gonna be scanning craigslist and starting to look at 740's around here - get an idea of what is a good deal. Also, allows me to see various issues that might arise with the car.

As for repairs I am not sure what I am going to do. I have a buddy who used to be a Bimmer mechanic, so Im sure he will be useful. I might spend a day in a junk yard taking apart an old 7 series. Familiarize myself with the car.

Just look at her....ugh gorgeous!

I'd take the Mercedes over BMW any day after warranty. Even Audi would be better option. Drive an E500 or Audi8 before you make your decision.

Make sure you set aside enough money for unexpected repairs. Any BMW will be much more expensive to maintain than a G35. Providing your own labor will help, but the parts still aren't cheap. Your buddy should be able to suggest how much.

BMW coupes and sedans from that era are some of the most elegant cars on the road. I have never understood how their designers could go so wrong after getting it so right. A few days ago, I saw a 135 convertible. Talk about butt ugly!

I had an E32 750iL. Its a great vehicle. The problem is that you are going to have high maintenance cost. Parts are expensive, most mechanics charge more.

I loved it though.

too old for me too... nice car but too old...

then i would rather have an M5 over a 7 series... about the same amount of room too... but way more fun to drive!

when my g35x gets old on me im really considering getting a M5...

A few years ago I bought a 6 series with 71,000 miles on the clock. Within 6 months I had spent 2k on brakes, exhaust, ignition switch, and water pump. When the head gasket blew I was toast and so was the Beemer! Good Luck, you'll need it

If you buy that car you will live to regret it! This car will require a great deal of maintenance. I have owned 5 BMWs over the years. The are great cars when everything is working, but you better be prepare for a ton of electrical and coolant system problems!

I have worked on these cars for over 15 years and have experience too much financial pain to consider a used model. I recently sold two 540i's.

As long as you can afford repairs on that car.
