So I am thinking about registering my car in another state, I have some relatives that live in the south...Nevada, Florida, & North Carolina...

I was wondering if some folks here could chime in on the smog regulations in those states and how hard it would be to register my car there...

Florida is super easy to do it in. As you can renew via mail forever. This dude I know has had florida plates on his Z while living in Virginia for years. No issue other than sending the payment.

If CA is anythng like AZ, it won't fly.

If you are employed here, attend school here, or live here (pay rent or own a home), you are required to register your car in AZ within 30 days of entry.

Believe it or not, there's a hotline where people can rat you out. And believe me, it works.

Besides, don't you think they've already thought of that? With CA's retarded smog laws, I'm sure LOTS of people would love to register elsewhere.

Some of the same type of thing happesn here in Cincy/NKY, as KY tag fees are much higher. The problem is never if they don't find you, but when they do. They make the penalties high enough to discourage, so be careful that you don't find yourself looking dow the wrong end of a BIG MONEY fine/impoundment.

ive always registered my cars in ohio, when i technically live in michigan. michigan has no fault insurance which BLOWS!! ive just always put my cars titles in both me and my stepdads names, that way i can get registered in ohio, and get insurance cheaply thru his name. NO emissions here eithere BWAHAHAHA

Indiana's the same way... no emissions either. God bless the midwest, even if it does lack s14's.

No offense man, but the midwest sucks. I've gone to school there for the last 2.5 years and I'm not a big fan.

Thats stupid if you go to school there, you have to change everything over. I was thinking about going to school out there, but I wouldn't want to change the plates from NY to AZ unless I was living there. I go to school OH, but I'm not changing my plates until I know where I'll be living for a while.

I thought it was based on your permanent address, so if you're going to school there, but you still have your home address somewhere else, you'd keep it at your home address. As far as doing stuff out of state, if the title is in somebody elses name, and that person lives in a different state, it be registered under their name. So I don't see how you could get fined for that, you'd just be pretty much borrowing the car. THough anytime you get pulled over they might call the owners of the car to make sure it's not stolen or something, not sure about if you have multiple people on the title though. If I get pulled over I jsut lie about how long I've been in IL. I say I've been giong to college and my mom jsut moved ilke a couple weeks ago, that way I'm still within registering time. The car is under her name because insurance is cheaper that way, and she gets pissed off if i mention registering the car in IL so I can go do emisions and then remove all the EGR crap and what not.

Sure if the title is in someone else's name, it could be done. If they want to take the liability of you driving around in their car, then more power to you. I don't think that was the intent though. Residency is probably defined by your driver's license and/or the state you pay income tax to. A student can justifiably have a permanent address with his/her parents' and keep the vehicle registered in their state (and pay out-of-state tuition). But if you get pulled over in SoCal with Indiana plates, and you only have a CA driver's license, you might be in for a bit of trouble.

In states with tough emissions regulations, the local PD is aware of the states (especially neighboring) with no or easier regulations. My brother who lived in GA, but would visit my parents regularly (in MD) was stopped one day within a block of my parents house, and it was a big deal to prove he wasn't trying to get around the emissions laws (with a 25 yr old car). There's no testing for cars that old, but the state inspection would still apply.

In short (too late ), as I said before, it's a gamble and the cost is much more than most want to pay, can exceede the value of the car.

ok...did soime checking and I have a tentative plan. I have a cousin who lives in Nevada. SHe has a house and is well established. She said it would be ok to use her address for registration and she would be more than happy to register the car in her and MY name...That way IF I get pulled over, I am on the title. The only snag is: She lives in Washoe County, one of the only two that Nevada requires smog testing. HOWEVER, I have heard that the standards are a lot more lenient. So we'll see...I will keep you up to date.

THIS IS GREATexactly whats going on in my Life, so my father lives in New mexico, and me and my mother live here in northern california, so over last summer i flew to my dads and fixed up a 95' 240sx, and i droveit back, however it wont pass smog, and we dont exactly have the money to pay to register an out of state car (dosnt it cost more to register a car from another state?)so i was going to have my father regitster it in his name and mine and i drive it up here, however i have a california drivers lisence (my mother still has new emxico if that matters)im 17 so i still attend a public high school.

i was going to say the car belongs to my father and i live cali but for summers i live in new mexico, and he gave me this car to get to and from school...

is there a problem with this plan???or would it work?

thanks to any one who has any knowledge with this.

My friend keeps his car insured in Indiana under his rental propery because michigan insurance is too high and no-fault insurance sucks.

Being Military lets you pick any state you want as a residence. Then you can register your car there. My buddy has been doing it for years. I'm switching mine right now, no more smog or any inspection for that matter.

Well, I have checked the Nevada DMV site...scheck this out. Its easy to register your car their IF you have a residence...i.e. my cousin...However, obtaining a DL is very difficult because they do not consider Cali DL as proof of identity...you need a passport!

It even states, that if you are a out-of-state STUDENT, you are unable to obtain a Nevada DL...

So here is my plan...register the car in Nevada with my cousin on the title...And tell the cop I am a student their, originally from California...Should work...

Lastly...HOW DO THEY CRACK DOWN??? Track you for 20 days? Is their a citation they can give you?

Keep you posted.

Eventually they will pull you over to find out how long you've been in the state. A flag will be put on your car in the database. If you get pulled over again, and you've exceeded the legal stay without registering in CA, you will be cited. (Not sure how long is ok; do some research).

Just find someone that will look the other way and pass your car. There are alot of guys out there that do that, but it'll cost you.

Sucks for you. Here they just check to make sure the ECU isn't throwing codes (assuming OBDII) and that the gas cap pressurizes properly.

Good luck, but I don't think it'll work with you being in Cali.

Hey Greg, not to get off the subject, but...how are the emission rules out in AZ ?

Because im planning on moving out there next year and i want to have a limit to how far i can mod the car before i get into any emission problems.

Is it pretty easy to slip past emissions there? are the cops more lenient on it as well ?
