I'd suggest getting to know some of your upper-classmen in your major. Spend some time with them and peek at their notes - then ask yourself: is this what I want to be doing in 4 years?

i am also into cars, and i am going to drexel in philly for engineering.

be ready for alot of work, but the actual amount differs with the professor running the course. if your college has coop/internships usually the work is more fast paced than a non-coop school because they try to get you into a coop program by your pre-junior year. which means you need to know most of your calc, chem, and physics by the end of soph year.

I really hate all the work but if i can stick with it till the end of soph year then the next 3 years will kick ***. internship at nissan anyone? :ylsuper

I am a graduating senior at CSUN majoring in Mechanical Engineering and also like to be in the automotive industry. I am currently doing my second year of FSAE and this year I am the project manager of the team (http://www.ecs.csun.edu/sae).

CSUN's automotive program isn't strong after the earthquake, but getting more interest after our great success last year with our FSAE car. Doing FSAE is the best way to get in the industry and if you're dedicated you won't have time for Co-Ops or internships. It has brought me the awesome opportunity to work with Yamaha and Ricardo.

There are not many internships relating to automotive since we are outside the commute area to the companies. There are a few small companies in the area though so talk to the professors. It shouldn't discourage you, as many graduates go to the automotive industry and also the So Cal SAE section has alot of people from Nissan on the board.

If you need more info, feel free to PM me.

2nd on FSAE, graduating senior too, chief of chassis and integration.

Best opportunity you will have, and in my opinion, you gain far more experience than in most internships anyway.

kaizen, how did your car do? sounds like you guys went with a pretty standard setup, zexel, vanillaRC, yamaha powerplant....could be a competitive car.

Our car placed 10th place last year, best ever here at CSUN. It was a standard setup that was very simple to manufacture and it had a lot of hp and tq compared to our previous car. This year's a bit different by being much smaller and a new monocoque rear end.

It surely is the best opportunity and you will have stories to tell.

HA.. I just dropped my ME major yesterday after spending 3 years with it. It's always a challenge to know how you will fare in a certain field over time. I did fine in it but it just lost it appeal. It is definitely a very versatile major as far as career placement goes, but in reality you can do all the automotive engineering you want without a ME degree as long as you have the will to learn the material on your own or through idependent course that are more focused.. I switched because I want to move farther in my education then just a BS and ME is to easy to just move out of school and find a job.. Just my .02. Sorry for rambling, I'm drunk since I am now enjoying my new Asrtophysics career.. HA <---what was I thinkin???

CSUN and Cal Poly Pomona are great schools for engineering and FSAE. At CSUN, FSAE is a class for ur senior project, while Pomona is a club effort I believe. You can volunteer for it, only if you show up everyday and show dedication and interest. Some people tried and rarely saw them so they were booted.

Our ME department is great. Very small so you can really get to know all of the professors. The curriculum has been revamped for this year.

Yes this is for CSUN. As project manger this year, I wouldn't accept any less than 8 hours a week (you'd probably clean the huge lab we got to earn ur keep :) ), next year manager will be different. I just don't want people taking advantage of the privelage to be on FSAE and not doing anything.
