Thinking about LSD for my non-S G37

As I've mentioned in several threads here, one of the only complaints I have with my G37 is its lack of straight line traction when accelerating from a stop. I was thinking about sourcing a limited slip diff from a G37S from a salvage yard to swap into my non-S model. My thought is that a better power distribution may help the car "hook" a bit more.

My questions are.. Has anyone driven a G37 with and without the LSD that can comment on traction differences, and also, is it a direct swap as long as I purchase the entire carrier unit?

Of course, any other thoughts on the matter would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!

Well, since apparently nobody has any thoughts on this, I suppose I'll be the pioneer. From the research I've done, it seems the differentials for all G37 models are interchangeable. They should all bolt right up, the only exception being an input flange difference for auto or manual trans. So I went ahead and ordered one today that came from a 2011 G37S coupe with 20K miles. Once it's delivered, I'll have to get my buddy to let me use his lift since there's no way I'm trying to install that behemoth on my back in the driveway. It may take a few weeks, but I'll post up my experience and my impressions of the LSD once the install is complete.

Great info! My only comment would be about the new one...does it require a different harness or ECU to control it? (I thought they were electronic, but I could be wrong)

I was initially concerned about that when I noticed sensors on the diff housing. But after more research, it seems the LSD (or more specifically, VLSD) in the G37 is the viscous type, which, by definition, relies on the mechanical interaction of discs and fluid inside the unit to determine how the power is allocated between the output shafts. It doesn't use any power actuated clutch-type mechanism. Best I can tell, the sensors probably tie into the computer to provide feedback for traction control and such, but the torque vectoring inside the diff is mechically, not electronically controlled.

While I've driven many G's that didn't have VLSD I really never paid attention as they were loaners. Both my current G's are sport edition.

Post up how the swap goes and your impression of it afterward, would be good to know.

I wish the sport verts had the VLSD. I was thinking of getting a quaife if I'm going to do it.

Yeah, but When I lay down the pedal fast it will lay rubber from both wheels which is odd.

Next time I drive it I'll have to check it out. I always treat others cars much much better than my own and have not beat on it. Granted, I baby mine.
