Consumer Reports no longer covers '97 and older cars. I am looking for a reliable, fun to drive mid-size, RWD, Lux. car. I have been looking around and it seems like the Auto transmission is the weak spot for these cars mechinicaly. Is there a factory ATF cooler in them, can one be added? What years had the LSD rear diff? Are there weak spots for rust on these cars? Thanks in advance for the help.

i have a 95 t, and it also came with LSD stock...., there are not many problems with rust on this car, i have owned the car for 3 years in montreal, and i have not noticed any rust yet on the car , i regularly polish my car to prevent rust in the winter, i have a big chip "from fender bender that i didnt claim" on the engine cover, and i dunno if anyone noticed but the engine cover is made out of aluminum, which doesnt rust. about the transmission, there is a topic in this forum that discusses the transmission cooler..... however i dont have one, but i've also heard alot of stories about the weak transmission on the j's, so i'm considering a transmission cooler...... all in all, it is an amaizing, fast, reliable, and a very well made car, i love it

The rear lsd most likely make the car better than most RWD's in the snow and rain. A aluminum hood?? Is it galvanized or all aluminum??

The J30s are very reliable.. Lots of parts the same as the maxima and Z32 so parts will be cheap.....

Rust seems to be less problematic on the Js than it is on the Qs (which its hardly a problme on the Q)... The trans is kinda weak because it needs better cooling... external cooler is the way to go... Thats the key, once you add one theyll lsat for a long time.

All J30s came with LSD stock.

And Rust is a huge problem up north. Especially is muggy humid aread like chicago or seattle. Mainly on the running board where it was welded.

Other than that its a great car. The transmission is a not a problem very often, just poor maintenance.

Running boards rust???

No CAR I have ever seen had running boards? SUV's and Trucks yes, but not cars? Do you mean the ROCKER PANELS??? Under the doors between the front and rear wheels?

Yes, I belive that is what he means.

If you want to take a road trip to Mississippi, I have a nice, rust-free 93 J30t that I'll sell you.

I would only purchase a vehicle that has had one or two owners and has a fairly complete service history. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of time and $$$ bringing it up to driving condition.

Hi!

Would recommend a J30 anytime. As for the issue of the transmission, my 1994 J is 151K old and is on the original. As for rust, the only issue is the underside of the front doors. Not much and easily taken care of. One of the sturdiest, if not the sturdiest cars ever to come across. In simple terms: it is built like a M1 Abrams tank. Give it the time to maintain and don't skimp on repairs or parts replacement, it will last. As I have said in other posts, "they don't make them like this anymore."

Very respectfully,Manuel

OK, just looked in Autotrader and found a '97 J30t with only 65k on the clock in KC, but they want $9,500!! My brother is going to look at soon. Anyone know a good independant Infinity/Nissian shop in the area where he can have it checked out? The VIN # is JNKAY21D2VM503201 anyone know anything about the car? Carfax comes back with seven entries!

Carfax dont mean much most of the time. Probably just emission visits or whatever.

Well if he likes what he sees he will get a Carfax on it and see the details. Kelly and Edmunds say this car only should go for $7,500 MAX this guy is asking $9,500!!

Ok, my brother had a checked out by a tech and he said the rear end bouncyness was due too negative camber on the rear wheels. A full four wheel alignment should help. He also stated that the car has a power steering leak. My brother offered him $6,500 for the car with the issues.

Are power steering leaks common in J's??

What parts does a RWD J30 share with a FWD Maxima? I have never seen many 300ZX's in Northeast. Mostly cause there are RWD and would not be practical daily drivers with our winters.
